So what if Rashid Khan hogged the limelight first with his hat trick while captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT)? It’s the victory that matters the most they say. But when the victory comes on the back of some electrifying performance, the watchers of the game feel extreme satisfaction.
They forever remember these types of stimulating games. Well today, it was Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Rinku Singh whose astounding and fearless hitting snatched the victory from the defending champions on Sunday (April 9) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Knight Riders had to chase down 205 runs. The credit goes to Vijay Shankar’s scintillating unbeaten 63 off 24 balls. With the huge target in front of them, KKR faltered with the load of pressure at the start.
Mohammed Shami with the new ball rarely misses scalping wickets in the powerplay. He sent Rahmanullah Gurbaz packing in the third over, followed by Narayan Jagadeesan’s departure in the next over off Joshua Little. The match looked like it was heading toward a one-sided one but no.
Nitish Rana played a captain’s innings, scoring 45 runs from 29 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 155.17. He fell short of five runs to reach his half-century when Alzarri Joseph’s dismissing the skipper ended the stand between him and Venkatesh Iyer.
Twitteratis heap praise on Rinku Singh for his nail-biting finish
Venkatesh Iyer played a clutch innings, the most required by the KKR at that moment. He took 40 balls to score 83 runs, laced with eight fours and five sixes at a terrific strike rate of 207.50. But before he could slam a hundred, his knock was restricted by Alzarri Joseph. Joesph delivered a full ball which Iyer couldn’t connect well and ended up giving an easy catch to Shubman Gill.
But the turning point of the match was Rashid Khan‘s hat trick. Kolkata were at 155/5 when Rashid got rid of the dangerous Andre Russell on the first ball of the 17th over. On the next ball, he sent Sunil Narine into packing, followed by Shardul Thakur’s dismissal. On the back of Shardul Thakur‘s blitzkrieg, KKR snatched victory from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). But he fumbled in front of the Afghan spin wizard.
Only Rinku Singh was left as a batter. Many might have even switched off their televisions or mobile phones, thinking Gujarat will surely going to win this match easily. Those who missed this match should watch the highlights.
KKR were at 155/7 when Rinku Singh came out all guns blazing. Rinku had smacked a six and a four in the penultimate over. But what he did in the final one was absolute carnage. On the first ball off Yash Dayal, Umesh Yadav went for a single run to give Rinku the strike.
Rinku smashed the six off the second ball and followed it with four back-to-back maximums and at a time when everyone was wondering what was happening, Rinku snatched the victory from the defending champions. He remained unbeaten at 48 from 21 balls, with a four and six maximums. He scored 40 runs off the last seven balls he faced.
