There’s no doubt that India comprises world-class cricketers who have dazzled the cricket fraternity with their astounding knocks and bowling. It’s difficult not to find an Indian name in the top 10 of any record books.

India continues to produce youngsters who will become future stars. But, two-time World Cup champion Darren Sammy reminded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that despite producing its big assets, India have not got crowned with an ICC title since winning the 2013 Champions Trophy.

When you see the players they’ve been able to produce, Hardik Pandya, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal all the guys they produced over the years but you must also remember who’s winning international tournaments,” Sammy told cricket journalist Vimal Kumar on the latter’s YouTube channel. Sammy led West Indies to two World Cup titles, in 2012 and 2016.

Since the Champions Trophy in 2013, India played the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC) two times, in 2021 against New Zealand, and in 2023 against Australia. But on both occasions, India suffered heartbreaking defeats. Between 2013 and 2023, India failed to take home an ICC trophy as they got eliminated in the semifinal of the 2015 World Cup and 2019. Last year, England crushed their hopes in the T20 World Cup in the semifinals.

In 2012, Darren Sammy-led West Indies hammered hosts Sri Lanka by 36 runs to lift the T20 World Cup for the first time. In the final, Marlon Samuels top scored with a 56-ball 78 runs, while Sammy scored 26 runs, the second-highest for the team. With Sunil Narine‘s three-wicket haul, West Indies restricted the Lankans to 101 to win the match by 36 runs.

In the 2016 T20 World Cup final, West Indies faced England. Ben Stokes had to defend 19 runs in the final over and the watchers of the game were foreseeing an easy win for Eoin Morgan and his team. But Carlos Brathwaite held his nerves to produce the unthinkable.

He smashed four sixes in a row to lighten the Eden Gardens as West Indies got crowned T20 World Cup champions for the second time. Unfortunately though, this year, the Windies failed to even qualify for the ODI World Cup.
