“You’re learning off the best” – UAE spinner Karthik Meiyappan shares experience working with MS Dhoni

UAE leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan recently spoke about his experience working with former Indian skipper MS Dhoni during his stint at Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was acquired as a net bowler for the IPL 2021 season where he got an opportunity to spend time with the maestro.
UAE were to play a series against Ireland, who have batters who sweep a lot. Hence, Meiyappan asked Dhoni to give him advice on how to tackle batters who depend on sweep shots to score the majority of runs. As expected, he got some valuable tips from the best minds in the game.
“Before the Ireland series [in October 2021], I had a stint with CSK. I spoke to MS Dhoni about how I could handle them sweeping the ball because Ireland are more of sweepers. So, he gave me advice and, like I said, you’re learning off the best,” Meiyappan told ESPNCricinfo.

Karthik Meiyappan took hat-trick in T20 World Cup 2022
Karthik Meiyappan made headlines when he took a hat-trick at the T20 World Cup last month. His most memorable moment came against Sri Lanka when he became the fifth bowler to take a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup game. He revealed that it took time for him to realize what he pulled off.
“Definitely, it [the hat-trick] took some time to sink in. When I came back home to Dubai, it slowly started kicking in that I actually pulled off something spectacular. The family support I’ve had over the years is incredible. To come back home and for them to let it sink in was the best part,” the 22-year-old UAE leg-spinner said.

Meiyappan is currently part of the Chennai Braves in the ongoing T10 league in Abu Dhabi. He will join the likes of Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa. It will be another opportunity for him to showcase his talent. It will be interesting to see if he gets a promotion from the net bowler for IPL 2023.
