Wasim Jaffer chooses this player as CSK’s captain after MS Dhoni’s retirement from IPL

After the Indian Premier League 2023, Chennai Super Kings’ main concern will be to choose their leader because the 16th edition of the cash-rich league might be MS Dhoni‘s last tournament. He shocked everyone by stepping down from the leadership role in IPL 2022. And following a disastrous first half under Ravindra Jadeja‘s captaincy, Dhoni was reinstated as the leader of the Men in Yellow.
Despite a rumored rift between Jadeja and CSK, the all-rounder was retained for the next season. But it remains to be seen if Jadeja will be given the captaincy in the future or not. At present, Dhoni will lead the next season, but CSK can eye the free agents- Kane Williamson and Mayank Agarwal, who led Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings in IPL 2022, respectively.
However, former India opener Wasim Jaffer, who will be the batting coach for Punjab Kings in IPL 2023, thinks differently when it comes to CSK’s future captain. Jaffer observed that Ruturaj Gaikwad can be given the leadership role following Dhoni’s retirement from IPL.
Wasim Jaffer explains why he thinks Ruturaj Gaikwad can be the one to lead CSK in future
Wasim Jaffer explained that as Ruturaj Gaikwad is young and captains Maharashtra as well, CSK might choose him as their next leader. Also, he backed other players as well because they’ll be playing their last IPL under the most-successful IPL as well as India captain MS Dhoni.
“They will stick with Devon Conway (as wicketkeeper) I feel. He is the next in line. MS might look at somebody else as well. I don’t know who that will be. I feel they’ll have their eyes on who is gonna lead CSK after Dhoni. Gaikwad could be that one,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.
“Because he is young. He captains Maharashtra as well. They might look to develop him as the next leader and probably give him some responsibility. I hope Shivam Dube, Mukesh Chowdhary, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, and even Subhranshu Senapati- these guys need to have a good season,” he added.
