Former India cricketer Suresh Raina took a cheeky dig at Mumbai Indians (MI) after they removed Rohit Sharma from captaincy duties by handing the role to Hardik Pandya. Raina and Parthiv Patel were discussing the auction strategies of teams in a mock auction ahead of the mini-auction for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).

When Patel asked Raina to hold the MI paddle, although the latter held it at first, he dropped it seconds later with a remark. He did not say much though, but according to Rohit fans, Raina took a dig at MI.

Mahela Jayawardene explains the tough decision of removing Rohit Sharma as captain

That MI has won all of their five titles under Rohit Sharma’s leadership since his taking over the reign from Ricky Ponting in 2013 triggered controversy when Hardik Pandya was given the role. Pandya had one achievement as captain in the IPL when he took Gujarat Titans (GT) to glory in their first appearance itself, in the 2022 IPL. MI global head of cricket Mahela Jayawardene explained the reason behind the recent big change in MI camp.

It was a tough decision. It was emotional, to be honest. It's fair on the fans as well (to react). I think everyone is emotional, and we have to respect that as well. But at the same time, as a franchise, you have to make those decisions.

Jayawardene added that although the decision looked hasty in the eyes of many people, they will understand soon why they had to take that decision. The former Sri Lankan player also thinks Pandya’s experience as captain during his stint with GT makes him suitable for the captaincy responsibilities.
