After India’s below-par performance in the 2007 ODI World Cup, it took a long time for the fans to get out of the gloom. Cricket is like religion in India, so the shock exit made the situation worse for the cricketers. Their homes were pelted with stones, posters were burnt on the streets, and slogans were raised against the players.

India were placed in Group B, and they could collect just two points from three matches, which hindered their further advancement to Super 8. MS Dhoni was part of the team led by Rahul Dravid and witnessed that darker time after the ouster. He said when the team landed in Delhi, they got out of the airport in a police car and were traveling at a decent speed.

Dhoni said during a promotional event in New York in 2016 for his biopic MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

The players reached the police station and waited there for a while. His house in Ranchi was under construction, and it was pelted with stones by furious fans.

That actually had a big impact on me, and I channeled the aggression to become a better cricketer and a better human being.
