BCCI roped in English auctioneer Hugh Edmeades for the player’s auction for the upcoming season of the IPL. He was also the auctioneer at the mega-auction for IPL 2022. However, he suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground on the first day of the event due to postural hypotension.

Hugh was immediately examined by the medical team and was declared unfit to conduct the auction. As a result, Sports presenter Charu Sharma stepped up to act as the auctioneer and did a magnificent job of carrying on the show. However, Hugh returned to host the final leg of the auction and was received with applause.

The 62-year-old auctioneer, who has hosted over 2500 auctions, expressed his excitement at returning to the IPL auction. “I am thrilled to have been asked by the BCCI to conduct the 2023 IPL auction and am excited about visiting Kochi for the first time,” Hugh Edmeades told Sportstar.

Hugh Edmeades took over the IPL auction hosting duties from Richard Madley in 2018 and has been in charge of the event ever since. The mini-auction will take place on December 23 in Kochi and will be his sixth auction. The event couldn’t be organized overseas due to logistic issues.

The window for the release and retaining of players ended on November 15. While 163 players were retained by the franchises, 85 players were released. The latest auction will see a total of 407 players go under the hammer to get selected in a maximum of 87 spots in 10 teams.

The teams will have an additional INR 5 crore to spend this year, apart from the money left from the IPL 2022 auction and the value of players released. This means that the purse of each side is now INR 95 crore from 90 crore. It will be interesting to see how the action unfolds on the decisive day.
