Will MS Dhoni play in IPL 2024? CSK CEO provides major update

It has been fifteen years and sixteen editions since Mahendra Singh Dhoni first featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 41-year-old has won four IPL titles as captain and five as a player. In these sixteen editions of the world’s biggest T20 league, Dhoni has played for only two teams- Chennai Super Kings and now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants. However, Dhoni is synonymous with CSK as the Ranchi-born cricketer has represented the franchise for fourteen editions.

While Dhoni is still playing CSK in IPL 2023, the biggest question this year has been, how long? Although Dhoni has maintained the suspense around his IPL retirement, giving mixed hints, CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanath has cleared the air by dropping a major hint about Dhoni’s IPL retirement.

Vishwanath has said that he is expecting Dhoni to play one more season before calling it a day.  “We believe MS Dhoni is going to play next season as well, so I hope fans will continue to support us like every time,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said. His comments came after CSK took a lap of honour after their game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

Notably, MS Dhoni and Co. took a walk around the stadium as fans cheered for them. Dhoni was even launching tennis balls into the stand using a racquet. He also threw a few CSK match t-shirts for the fans.

The way MS Dhoni has carried himself in IPL 2023, coming to bat only with a few balls left and using words like “farewell” and “last phase of my career”, it seems like he has already made up his mind. Dhoni has been tight-lipped about his IPL retirement but his gestures have made fans think he is really going to hang up the boots.

Even when the CSK skipper was leading the lap of honour at Chepauk on Sunday, he had a wide smile on his face and a sense of gratitude for fans in his eyes. So, it will be interesting if Dhoni comes back to lead CSK in IPL 2024.
