Gujrat Titans completed a hat-trick of victories on Friday when they chased down 190 against Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium. Shubhman Gill hit 96, and Rahul Tewatia hit Odean Smith for sixes off the final two balls of the game to seal a thrilling win for GT, who have now surpassed Lucnow Super Giants to take second place in the IPL 2022 points table.

With Hardik Pandya and David Miller at the crease, GT needed 18 off the final over. Hardik was run out in the final over, putting the onus on Rahul Tewatia, who had given up 24 runs in his only over on Friday.

Earlier, GT skipper Hardik Pandya chose to bowl, and PBKS found themselves in trouble when Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow both left early. Shikhar Dhawan became the first Indian to score 1000 runs in T20s, but he struggled to get started. Liam Livingstone (64 off 27) bowled another brilliant innings to help PBKS finish with a total of 189 for 9. Jitesh Sharma’s cameo near the end of the game helped PBKS add some valuable runs against a strong GT bowling attack.

GT were cruising along at 133 for 1 in the 15th over, chasing 190, before losing Sai Sudharshan (35 off 30). Hardik Pandya came to the crease and joined Shubman Gill, who has been on a roll. Arshdeep Singh, who was tying them down, prevented them from accelerating. He conceded just 11 runs in his final 2 overs (the 16th & 18th of the GT innings). The equation eventually boiled down to GT needing 12 runs off two balls and Rahul Tewatia being the batter on strike. The southpaw, Rahul Tewatia who arrived in the very last over, defied expectations and smashed Odean Smith for two consecutive sixes as the Titans clinched the contest by six wickets.

Shubman Gill recorded his highest score in IPL

Shubman Gill was dismissed for 96, four runs short of a well-deserved hundred. If he had reached the century mark, he would have become the fifth youngest batter in IPL history, joining Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant, Devdutt Padikkal, and Sanju Samson. This is now Gill’s highest IPL score. He had previously set an IPL career high of 84 against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings on April 2.

In a chase of 190, Shubman Gill expertly anchored the GT innings against a quality PBKS bowling attack. After GT lost opener Matthew Wade early, he and Sai Sudharshan shared a sensational 102-run partnership. Gill, who was only 22 years old and 212 days old, played like a seasoned pro. This is Gill’s fifth season in the IPL, and his innings on Friday demonstrated his skill, timing, and placement. It was a world-class innings, and Gill demonstrated that there is room for batters who do not necessarily play big shots to shine in T20 cricket.
