Rohit Sharma celebrates a milestone

India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma is eager to have the fans in the stands. It has been over a year now since we had a packed house of passionate fans watch an international game in India. The pandemic ravaging around the world has led all the games to host matches behind closed doors.

Sharma took to Twitter to express his desire of performing in front of his “?.?.?.?.?.?.?”. Like every other sportsperson in the world, Sharma is missing the fans who are a huge part of the game in this part of the world. “?.?.?.?.?.?.?, this is the reunion I am waiting for!” Rohit tweeted.

The last limited over game in India where crowds were allowed was back in 2020 when South Africa toured India. Ever since, only once have fans been allowed in the stands and that was in the second Test against England in Chennai earlier this year. Nonetheless, the thrill of having the fans cheer in a limited over game is absolutely electric.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) getting suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic infiltrating the teams, the focus has shifted squarely on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and what they do with regard to the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup for which they are the hosts. UAE has already been decided as the backup venue but it remains to be seen as to what decision is taken.

The COVID-19 situation is dire in India at the moment with over 3 lakh positive cases being reported on a daily basis. With a third wave predicted in the month of November as well, there are a lot of concerns about holding any sporting event in India at the moment. However, a senior BCCI official reassured today that the BCCI have still not considered moving the World Cup out of India to the UAE.

If everything goes well and the second wave of pandemic subsides by the time of the tournament, we might see fans being allowed for the T20 WC. It will be a great advantage for the hosts to have fans cheering them on at the World Cup. With India favorites to lift the trophy this year, the addition of fans will only add to the joy of ending a decade long wait for a World Cup.
