Dhoni
Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is one of the best strategists the game has ever seen. Dhoni’s swift decision making and belief in his players is what made him one of the most successful captain in the game. The destructive finisher has guided the Indian bowlers to sucess from behin the stumps over the years.
While Rishabh Pant has been in the news lately for his cheeky remarks, MS Dhoni was in no way behind him when it came to hilarious comments behind the stumps. The Jharkhand batsman was a witty customer and had numerous humorous observation, along with his wisdom for the bowlers. Here’s a look back at some of the wittiest, cheekiest conversations that were recorded of MSD on the stump microphones.
“Oy Sree! Udhar girlfriend nahin hai”
MS Dhoni is a master at setting the perfect field for his bowlers. During the first Test against India in Ahmedabad, the master tactician came up with a hilarious way of getting S Sreesanth‘s attention while setting the field. Pragyan Ojha was the bowler and Kane Williamson was at strike as Dhoni came up with the cheeky comment.
“Oye Sree girlfriend nahi hai udhar, idhar aaja thoda (Sreesanth your girlfriend is not there, please come a little squarer),” Dhoni was heard saying.

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shares a great bond with MS Dhoni. Having played for the same team in the IPL and for India, the duo understands each other very well. Dhoni was often seen guiding Ashwin through the batsman’s thought process back when they played together.
Ashwin and Dhoni had a code word and it kept the batsman guessing. Whenever Dhoni wanted the off-spinner to surprise the batsman with the wrong-un (ulta), he would call for the “Tarak Mehta” inspired by the popular Hindi serial “Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chasmah’. “Isko Tarak Mehta daal,” Dhoni was once caught saying in the stump mic.
Ravindra Jadeja gets a scolding from MS Dhoni
Ravindra Jadeja is yet another spinner who has played a lot under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Jadeja is renowned for his accuracy with the ball in hand, but once in a while even the best falter. During a Test match between India and New Zealand in 2014, Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling were at the crease. Jadeja, who had the ball in hand, was going for runs and this set off Dhoni.
Dhoni went on to remind Jadeja to bowl according to the field. “Jaddu thoda off mein daal. Pujara ko udhar taali bajane nahi rakha hai“(Jadeja bowl on the off stump. Pujara is not standing there to clap),” Dhoni was heard saying.

In a match against England during the 2016 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli was asked to roll his arm over as India went in with four bowlers. In his first over, Kohli managed to get Kevin Pietersen with a wide yorker. An excited Kohli, after getting the wicket, started trying different variations. However, one was wide down the leg side and yielded byes as well.
Dhoni immediately walked up to Kohli and said: “Jitna bola hai utna kar, bowler mat bann” (Do what you are being told, don’t try to be a bowler).
Suresh Raina gets a wake up call
Apart from being a destructive batsman, Suresh Raina was a handy off spinner too. During his time in the national team, MS Dhoni never hesistated in tossing him the ball and more of then than not, he rewarded the captain with a breakthrough. Raina has 62 international wickets to his name at an very impressive strikerate.
It was during a game against Ireland that the southpaw was out of rhythm. Raina was all over the pitch with the ball when Dhoni decided to give him a wake-up call. “Jaag ke zara. Uska pair dekh kaise hil raha hai uske hisaab se anticipate kar. Volleyball ki tarah khada hua hai beech mein (Wake up! Look at his feet and anticipate. He is standing like a volleyball in the middle),” Dhoni chirps.
