Commonwealth Games 2022 has started and India played its first match against the reigning T20 champions Australia in the opening match at Edgbaston, in Birmingham on Friday, July 29. Indian pacer Renuka Singh, who is also playing her seventh T20 broke Australia’s back with her four-wicket haul.
Batting first, India set a decent target of 155 with the help of Shefali Verma’s 48 runs off 33 balls and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur‘s 52 runs off 34 balls. Renuka’s Singh’s striked earlier in the Powerplays with lethal deliveries during Australia’s chase.
She dismissed the destructive Alyssa Healy in the first over before getting rid of Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning. A length ball, which was also a sharp inswinger dismissed the dangerous Tahila McGrath.
Australia’s score read 49/5 and it seemed easier for India to win the match. But Ashleigh Gardner’s 52* runs off 35 balls and Grace Harris’ 37 and later Alana King’s 18* turned the table.
Aussies displayed that they can win a match from any situation. When they were at the brink of losing the game, they pulled off a three-wicket win. Renuka scalped four wickets and conceded 18 runs in the four overs.
“We wanted to win the match and it was definitely in our hands almost till the end. But we only have two fast bowlers now and the wicket is helping the fast bowlers. We missed Pooja (Vastrakar)…” Renuka said in the post-match interaction with the media in Birmingham.
Talking about her performance, Renuka said, “We were working more on fitness and we had a fitness camp recently and that helped me. We are also planning to hit the hard length and I am benefiting from that. Since I am a swing bowler, I am working on that area. The more I can swing the ball, the better it is…”
“I have worked on my speed and endurance. Those are the two important things for a fast bowler,” she added.
