“A victory for common sense”: Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges not allowed to participate in British event

Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges will not be allowed to participate at the National Omnium Championships scheduled to be held on Saturday after a ruling by the Union Cycliste Internationale said British Cycling.
Bridges will be ineligible to compete in her first ever event in women’s Derby, where she would be alongside several big names like five time Olympic champion Laura Kenny. According to British cycling, Emily Bridges “Transgender and Non-Binary Participation policy” before the UCI ruling.
“We have now been informed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) that under their current guidelines Emily is not eligible to participate in this event,” said British Cycling according to espn.in.

British Cycling said that they have been in close contact with UCI regarding Bridges’ participation in the event. They have also been in close contact with her family and with her transition and involvement in competitions. In 2018, Bridges set a national men’s record over 25 miles. After that, she began her testosterone reduction therapy.
“Transgender and non-binary inclusion is bigger than one race and one athlete – it is a challenge for all elite sports. We believe all participants within our sport deserve more clarity and understanding around participation in elite competitions and we will continue to work with the UCI on both Emily’s case and the wider situation with regards to this issue,” said British Cycling acknowledging her disappointment in the matter.
