Damien Harris has some harsh words for former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick for the way he handled the team post-Tom Brady era, especially during Mac Jones’ tenure causing his failed development.
Since Jerod Mayo took over the Patriots as the new head coach, the players have been opening up about the sheer difference in coaching style. There were already questions and criticism about Belichick’s coaching style which significantly impacted the team– leading to his departure.
Speaking of which, former Patriots’ running back Harris recently opened up about how Belichick’s attitude towards his coaching decisions impacted quarterback Jones’ performance and development as a quarterback.
What happened to Mac Jones in New England was not because of Mac Jones. What happened in New England to Mac Jones was because of the fact you took away an offensive coordinator, who coached him to be a Pro-Bowler and almost coached us to winning our division with a rookie quarterback in his first year.Damien Harris said.
Harris highlighted how when Jones was drafted by the Patriots, then-offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels coached him to earn Pro Bowl honors in his rookie year. But when he left to join the Las Vegas Raiders as the head coach, the entire offense of the Patriots collapsed.
Damien Harris slams Bill Belichick’s coaching carousel
While talking about how Belichick caused Jones’ failed development, the newly retired running back blamed Belichick for making the Patriots a losing team with some very questionable coaching staff. He highlighted how Belichick handed over the ropes of the offense in the hands of Matt Patricia, who has coached defense his entire life.
Matt Patricia goes from defensive coordinator to offensive coordinator. Well, why is that? It’s because we’re all just pawns in Bill Belichick’s game of Monopoly. We can all be moved, we can all be interchanged.Harris added.
Harris claimed Belichick was too “stuck in his ways” and didn’t care about the coach’s expertise before handing over the players, as he believed until what he says is obliged, the Patriots will succeed. However, that ‘imaginary’ success could never be achieved, and the team that dominated the league for two whole decades, finished at 4-13 last season which ultimately led to Belichick’s departure from New England.
