UFC 321 is set to take place this Saturday inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, with a stacked main card. In the main event, dominant heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall will defend his title against elite French contender Ciryl Gane. Ahead of the bout, Aspinall has engaged in promotional duties and recently sat down with Daniel Cormier for an interview.
Following his retirement, Cormier transitioned into a UFC analyst role and developed a strong bond with many fighters. His pre-fight interviews often go viral for their unique format, engaging approach, and ability to bring out fighters’ genuine personalities.
After his recent interview with Tom Aspinall, ‘DC’ whispered something secretive to the UK champion, but microphones captured their private conversation. Fans quickly made the leaked clip viral, where the UFC Hall of Famer appeared to criticize and mock the heavyweight division.
These matchups in this division, like what type of (expletive) run you could go on is crazy, Cormier told Aspinall. You can change your life. Because Jailton (Almeida) can’t fight. (Alexander) Volkov, you beat him in the first round. You’re on the verge of some crazy (expletive). Keep working hard though.

Tom Aspinall is currently riding an impressive three-fight win streak, having defeated several top heavyweights in dominant knockout fashion recently. His resume includes notable victories over elite contenders such as Curtis Blaydes, Sergei Pavlovich, Marcin Tybura, Alexander Volkov, and Andrei Arlovski. Aspinall’s only career setback in the UFC occurred in 2022, but he avenged that loss last year.

The 32-year-old fighter plans to dominate the UFC heavyweight division for several more years before exploring other combat sports. His father, Andy Aspinall, has encouraged him to try boxing someday, believing it offers greater financial rewards than MMA.
However, before making any switch, the knockout artist will aim to cement his legacy as the greatest heavyweight ever, a goal Cormier deems achievable. Daniel Cormier has long been one of Aspinall’s biggest supporters, especially during his campaign to fight UFC legend Jon Jones.
DC even mocked his former rival multiple times, accusing Jones of ducking Aspinall and denying younger fighters deserving opportunities to compete. As a former two-division UFC champion, DC enjoyed a remarkable career and dominant reign in the heavyweight division during his prime.
Prime Daniel Cormier would have dominated Tom Aspinall?
During his prime, Daniel Cormier was one of the most dominant heavyweights in UFC history, blending wrestling with relentless pressure. Cormier transitioned to the heavyweight division to become a double champion back in 2018. With the move up a weight class, DC showcased his incredible adaptability and fight intelligence against Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis.

With an Olympic-level wrestling background, Cormier controlled fights effortlessly, neutralizing powerful strikers with superior positioning, clinch work, and ground control. His biggest wins came against top heavyweight fighters like Stipe Miocic, Derrick Lewis, Antonio Silva, and Frank Mir, proving size mattered little against his tactical brilliance.
One of the fights that never happened was DC vs. Brock Lesnar; many experts believed Cormier would have won easily. In a recent interview, Tom Aspinall revealed how hard it would have been for him to beat DC in his prime.
Yeah, [I would definitely lose to] DC. Peak DC has the worst style for me ever. I’ve told him this. Short, just keeps walking forward, changing levels, he can knock you out or take you down. He’s got cardio for days. He’s a nightmare.

Currently, Aspinall is showing the same dominance but with a different fighting style that revolves around knockouts. Ahead of his fight with Ciryl Gane this weekend, the UK has promised to finish the Frenchman. Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see whether he can do what Cormier has envisioned him to achieve.
