The 2026 season was another painful year for the New York Mets as they finished last in the National League East. On Monday, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns offered his first thoughts regarding the season. During this, he made a “mulligans” comment regarding Pete Alonso, which caused a stir among the fanbase.

Following their disappointing end to the 2025 season, Alonso once again opted out of his deal. He had re-signed with the team earlier in February on a 2-year, $54 million deal.

Unlike last year, this time the Mets did not bring him back. In December 2025, he joined the Baltimore Orioles on a 5-year, $155 million deal and brought an official end to his time with the New York-based side.

He and the Mets both had contrasting years. While the Orioles also failed to get to the postseason, Alonso was one of their top performers.

The 5-time MLB All-Star crushed 43 home runs and had 113 RBIs in his first year in the American League. Only Kyle Schwarber and Pete Crow-Armstrong had more home runs (45 each) than he did.

The Mets, on the other hand, struggled in first-base production. Jorge Polanco, who was seen as a replacement for him at first base, managed to play just 37 games as he battled injuries.

On Monday, David Stearns was asked whether he would have done things differently regarding the Pete Alonso situation. While he admitted that the former Mets star had a “tremendous” year, the 41-year-old expressed that his job does not offer “mulligans.”

The truth is, in this job, I don’t get mulligans. I also recognize Pete had a tremendous year, and the totality of our production at first base wasn’t good enough.

Apart from Polanco, Mark Vientos and Jared Young also covered shifts at first base, with the latter playing 84 games in this position before his injury.

David Stearns claims the Mets must add pitchers to the starting rotation

Given the season’s disappointments, David Stearns has a lot of work to do to fix the Mets. One of them is to add pitchers to their starting rotation.

One of their major offseason signings last time around was Freddy Peralta through a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. This move, however, did not work out well for them, and he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in the middle of the season.

The team did have a young up-and-comer in Nolan McLean. In his first full season with the Mets, he posted a 3.16 ERA across 31 starts. Meanwhile, Zac Thornton, Jonah Tong, and Christian Stott are all expected to be fighting for a solidified spot in the rotation.

Stearns believes it is “necessary” for the team to add to their pitching rotation.

I do think it is necessary for us to add to our rotation. We can do that in a variety of different ways. We’ve talked about this plenty before, you’d always love to add to the top of your rotation, any team would love to do that.

David Stearns said as per SNY

Kodai Senga started just 8 games and was moved to a bullpen role. His role for the next season is still to be determined by the team. As for Sean Manaea, he was also placed in the bullpen before the start of the season as his velocity dipped. It will be interesting to see what the team does with him and the others to improve their rotation.
