Delhi ISSF WC: India win 3 more golds, remain on top of the medal table
In a good day for Indian shooters, the country won 3 golds and a silver to consolidate their position on top of the medal standings of the ISSF World Cup New Delhi.
On the concluding day of airgun competitions, Indian teams were expected to do well in the rifle and pistol mixed team events and the shooters duly delivered in the two new Olympic disciplines.
In shotgun, the Indian men’s skeet team caused a bit of an upset by beating Qatar in the finals while the women had to be content with silver.
10m Air Rifle Mixed Team
The duo of Elavenil Valarivan and Divyansh Singh Panwar put together a composed performance as India beat Hungary 16-10 in a match that was much closer than what the scoreline suggests.
The Hungarian team of individual medalists Istvan Peni and Eszter Denes ran the Indians close with many sets decided by just 0.1 points, but few 9s scored by Denes at crucial moments proved their undoing.
The bronze medal match between USA and Poland witnessed high quality shooting. The American team of Lucas Kozeniesky and Mary Carolynn Tucker eventually added to their golds won in individual events by eking out a narrow 17-15 win against Poland’s Tomasz Bartnik and Aneta Stankiewicz.
The other Indian team of Anjum Moudgil and Arjun Babuta could not qualify for the medal rounds.
10m Air Pistol Mixed Team
Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker churned out the high 10s in the latter stages to pull off an impressive 16-14 comeback win against their Iranian opponents. The Iran pair of Golnoush Sebghatollahi and individual gold winner Javad Foroughi got off to a great start and led 10-6 around the half-way mark before wilting in the face of high scores set by the Indian duo. Saurabh Chaudhary in particular was at his best in the latter half.
In the bronze match, Abhishek Verma and Yashaswini Singh Deswal eked out a scrappy 17-13 win versus Turkey’s Sevval Ilayda Tarhan and Ismail Keles. Abhishek was the most solid shooter in a match that saw inconsistent shooting from the other three. India had a good lead before Turkey pulled things back, but in the end the host team did just well enough to get past the 16 point mark.
Men’s Skeet Team
The Indian Men’s skeet team of Gurjoat Khangura, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa stunned Qatar 6-2 to win gold in the non-Olympic Men’s Skeet team competition.
Two of the Qatar trio of Nasser Al-Attiya, Rashid Hamad and Ali Ahmed A O Al-Ishaq had made it to the individual finals with Al-Attiya getting bronze. Qatar had topped qualifications with India in 2nd place. Kazakhstan, the only other team in the fray, was 3rd.
Women’s Skeet Team
The Women’s skeet team competition, similar to Air Pistol team, featured only two nations. This time however the Indian team of Ganemat Sekhon, Karttiki Singh Shaktawat and Parinaaz Dhaliwal were 2nd best and lost 4-6 to the Kazakhstan trio of Zoya Kravchenko, Rinata Nassyrova and Olga Panarina. Kravchenko had won silver in the individual event whereas Ganemat had won bronze.
