DeMarcus Cousins was once considered one of the best big men in the league. He had a soft touch around the basket, but also knew how to be aggressive and physically dominate when needed. Many felt he was destined to be a champion.

He made it to two All-NBA teams and 4 All-Star selections from 2015 to 2018. Those were the years when it seemed he was too good for the league. However, injuries played their part in first limiting the budding star and then finally forcing him to sit out a season.

When he was ready to return, unfortunately, teams did not want to offer him a contract. A new fan would wonder why a star center such as him, with his skill set, would not find a max contract ready to sign. He eventually signed minimum deals. However, a dig into his combustible past gave all the answers as to why no one wanted him.

To be fair, DeMarcus Cousins is only 34 years old, not an age when a perennial NBA star finds himself playing in Puerto Rico. An incident happened earlier today that sums up why no one wanted to keep him in the NBA.

After leaving the NBA, one of the first teams the Alabama native signed with was the Mets de Guaynabo basketball team. He resigned with them this season after playing elsewhere in between. In their game earlier tonight, he confronted a fan who was trash-talking him.

He gestured by grabbing his groin to taunt back, and when other fans tried to intervene, he almost threw hands. This led to an ejection, and the fans inside the arena cheered his dismissal. Then, as he walked towards the tunnel, matters turned for the worse.

DeMarcus Cousins tries to confront fans in the tunnel

When the team staff were escorting him towards the locker room, fans were still jawing with DeMarcus Cousins. One fan was closer to him than others, and the former Sacramento Kings’ 5th overall pick stretched his hand to try and touch the fan’s face.

This enraged the fan, and he threw his drink at him. Soon, other fans followed and threw their drinks at the 6′ 10″ center, triggering him. Cousins tried to jump into the crowd to confront one of the fans, but his team staff held him back and tackled him to the ground.

Considering how strong the Kentucky star is, he got up and again tried to go after the fans in the stands. Arena security jumped in and, along with team staff, held the star center back and moved him into the tunnel.

Usually, any aggressive altercations with fans are not tolerated by any league. Therefore, it would not be a surprise if the Puerto Rico league suspends DeMarcus Cousins. The suspension could be indefinite, knowing he went after multiple fans.

DeMarcus Cousins’ combustible attitude has cost him a Hall of Fame career

Cousins had the skill, physical strength, athleticism, and overall capability of becoming a Hall of Fame NBA player. He could have also won a championship or two had he kept his attitude and aggression under control.

The Sacramento Kings thought of him as their franchise-altering superstar. That changed after his confrontations with fans, reporters, officials, etc., all gave him the unofficial tag of the angriest player in the league.

No franchise wants to have a player on their team who is not someone brands, fans, and their partners want to associate with. Cousins had two chances as a star player to work towards a stellar career. If only he had kept his head in the game, he would have earned a lot more than the $94 million he earned in the NBA.
