There was a time when the Los Angeles Lakers wanted to keep Dennis Schroder around and even offered him a big contract. But the point guard declined it, believing he was worth more.

Even though he has tried to change that narrative, claiming that the franchise never offered him that deal, there is enough evidence to support the fact that he did decline a four-year, $84 million deal.

Since then, the German star has constantly been on the move. Apart from returning to the Lakers in the 2022-23 season on a one-year, $2.64 million deal, the guard has become a constant trade asset.

It is not as if he is a bad player or has character problems that force teams to move him. Had that been the case, the 32-year-old would have been out of the league by now.

Instead, he has become a short-term asset. That is, when he is available, the guard performs well to expectations. Then, when the team needs to find players who can improve the roster mid-season, Schroder becomes an easy trade piece to move.

The NBA record for the most teams an athlete has played for is 13. Dennis Schroder has just moved a step closer to matching that record after Shams Charania revealed that the Cleveland Cavaliers traded the star to the Charlotte Hornets.

Fans react to Dennis Schroder’s trade

Dennis Schroder might be a good player for teams to want him this much. But for a player to move this many times, fans could not contain themselves when they heard the news that he was going to play for his 12th team.

Some of them chose to remind him of the infamous contract situation he had with the Lakers. Others felt bad for him for having to move this many times, which also means moving his family. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The Charlotte Hornets did not make this move to help build Dennis Schroder’s legacy as a journeyman player. Rather, after trading away LaMelo Ball, they need a backup point guard to support Coby White. The team is moving in a different direction and wants a veteran presence to help them get to the next level.

The other team that benefitted from trading away Dennis Schroder was the Cleveland Cavaliers. The franchise was in the running to reunite with LeBron James. But when the superstar decided he would be better off with the Philadelphia 76ers, it seems his hometown felt they should move to plan B of acquiring another talented wing player.

This is obviously a salary-saving move. This maybe gives them a little more in the Peyton Watson sweepstakes.

Ramona Shelburne said on NBA Today

The ESPN senior writer reiterated that James Harden will return to the Cavaliers, as he is set on doing so. But what this trade allows the Cavs to do is to take the plunge on Denver Nuggets star Peyton Watson, who was the Plan B in case LeBron James did not return home.

The 23-year-old 6’8″ wing could be a franchise piece for the Cavs in the future, while also being a capable and dynamic presence on the perimeter, something the team sorely lacked these past two seasons.
