Despite making $100 million, why Karl Malone rejected paying $125 in child support to Gloria Bell?
After getting a 13-year-old girl pregnant, Karl Malone refused to acknowledge the child.
Karl Malone is one of the greatest players of all time, but when he was 20 years old, he once almost jeopardized his career by getting a 13-year-old girl pregnant. He refused to pay the weekly child support payment of $125 that the court had mandated.
Blood testing revealed that there was a better than 99 percent possibility that the boy was his after Bell launched a lawsuit against the former Utah Jazz legend, who had refused to acknowledge the child.
Finally, Bell and Malone came to an undisclosed out-of-court settlement. Demetress Malone, a professional NFL player and son of Karl Malone, didn’t know who his father was until after he dropped out of high school.
Karl Malone won the NBA Most Valuable Player award twice, was a 14-time All-Star, and was selected to the NBA First Team 11 times. He ranks third all-time in NBA scoring with 36,928 points, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James.
What John Stockton meant to Karl Malone?
Karl Malone and John Stockton were possibly one of the most lethal duos in NBA history, and they were household names during their Utah Jazz days. He asserted in an interview what John Stockton meant to him.
“What John Stockton doesn’t know is that he is like one of my older brothers to me, and not because he gives me the ball on the break. Mess with Stockton and you mess with me,” Karl Malone told Sports Illustrated in 1988.
“I love Chris Webber, but this was one time where I wanted to kick his ass. Right? So we had been wearing them out – at home – and Chris Webber started at half court looking for John Stockton. On the flip side, I say ‘Good on you Chris, for studying the playbook.’ And we ran that four up and he didn’t even care.“
He hit Stockton right in the sternum with his elbow. I damn near felt it and [it] hurt. …I felt so bad I went over to Coach [Jerry] Sloan and I said, ‘Coach, don’t run that again, please.’ Stock looked at me and said ‘No, I’m good, and the next play– well, you know,” Karl Malone remarked
Stockton and Karl Malone have a combined total of 25 All-NBA selections, 24 All-Star games, nine All-Defensive teams, and two NBA Finals appearances. Last year, both were named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary squad, and the two were honored during halftime of the All-Star game in Cleveland.
