“Dhaga khol diya ekdum”- Twitter goes frenzied as Ishan Kishan surpasses Chris Gayle to smash the fastest double century in ODIs
Ishan Kishan surpasses Chris Gayle to smash the fastest double century in ODIs
India might have lost the series but the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh will be remembered for Ishan Kishan‘s masterclass. The 24-year-old youngster roared away to a double ton and broke a series of records on Saturday (December 10) at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
He became the seventh batter and fourth Indian to achieve the feat. Other Indians before him are- Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Virender Sehwag. What’s more interesting about his knock is that he notched up the double ton off just 126 balls to create the history of the fastest double ton in ODIs, surpassing Chris Gayle’s double ton off 138 balls during the 2015 World Cup match against Australia. In his 210-run knock from 131 balls, Kishan’s biggies include 24 fours and 10 sixes at an impressive strike rate of 160.31.
Kishan wasn’t the first choice in the batting lineup for India. He was included in the XI after regular India skipper Rohit Sharma was ruled out following a thumb dislocation he suffered during the 2nd ODI. Rohit’s absence allowed the Ranchi-based cricketer and now, he can be the first choice of the selectors for the ODI World Cup in 2023.
Following opener Shikhar Dhawan’s dismissal, Kishan and Virat Kohli stitched a massive 290-run stand between them. The double hundred made Kishan the highest run-scorer in the three-match ODI series and interestingly, he played his first match. Kohli also raced to his 72nd ton and went on to score 113 off 91 balls.
Kishan also surpassed Australia’s Shane Watson (185* off 201 balls) to score the most runs by a visiting batter in Bangladesh. He surpassed former India skipper Saurav Ganguly (183 against Sri Lanka in 1999) to become India’s highest run-scorer as an opener in away from home match. Also, Kishan’s 210 is the highest run scored against Bangladesh.
Talking about the series, Bangladesh outclassed the Men in Blue in the previous two matches to take an unassailable lead of 2-0. India have the chance to save themselves from a whitewash with the total they are amassing. So far, India have scored 359/5 in 45th over with Washington Sundar (10 off 10) and Axar Patel (6 off 9) at the crease.
