- Dianna Russini has resigned from The Athletic amid controversy over her meetings with NFL coach Mike Vrabel.
- The resignation follows a Page Six report and photographs suggesting inappropriate conduct, which Russini denies.
- Fans and media speculate that her resignation implies guilt, raising questions about Vrabel's involvement as well.
Up until a couple of weeks ago, The Athletic’s lead NFL insider Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel were going about their task of analyzing prospects ahead of the Draft.
Then came the bombshell Page Six report, with pictures to prove that the two met at a hotel in Sedona, Arizona, after analyzing prospects at the Arizona State Sun Devils’ Pro Day.
The two provided statements that it was nothing more than a friendly meeting, and that they had six other friends in tow. However, fans and those across media circles felt that the photographs did not support their claims.
Another picture came out showing Vrabel and Russini at a bar alone after the NFL Combine, which forced The Athletic to start an investigation into their lead football reporter’s actions.
The league has strict rules on how far journalists can go to get information out of players and team personnel, which is why the investigation started.
Now, Dianna Russini has resigned with immediate effect. In the statement she released on her X page, the 43-year-old clarified that she and Mike Vrabel had not done anything unbecoming of two married people.

She also stated that this resignation did not imply that she was acknowledging the rumors. Rather, she was quitting her job so that conversations surrounding this did not continue.
Fans unsure about Dianna Russini’s claims
Dianna Russinni made it a point to bar anyone from commenting on her original statement. But that did not mean that the news of her resignation and snippets from her statement would not spread.
As soon as it did, fans pointed out one obvious fact. If they were not guilty, as the football world felt they were, why resign? If they were innocent, they could have gladly accepted the investigation, and after a period, things would have gone back to normal.
But quitting while allegations are still in the rumor phase gave fans the indication that those are possibly facts. Check out examples of those reactions below.
If we’re just being honest this explanation really makes zero sense. I don’t think anybody should lose their job over alleged canoodling but this statement makes it seem like there was definitely canoodling happening. An innocent canoodler would prob welcome a thorough… https://t.co/HCoSBoZ9Ty

She's for sure guilty of the affair &/or affairs. If I'm in her shoes and I'm completely innocent of these accusations, I don't "step away" like this, I fight it hard.

Her statement shows zero accountability. The Athletic let her resign to save any sort credibility she had left 😂

Another woman running from consequences of her own actions, shameful

They definitely told her to resign or she was getting fired. Now every single major media network should be covering this on TV tomorrow since there is clarity and finality on Dianna Russini’s future at the Athletic.

They didn’t give Ime Udoka any grace.
Tbh Virabel should be fired too. That's a bad example for the team.

Don’t you think resigning your well paid job, for a bunch of speculations will add more oxygen.

Dianna Russini might not get a job as an NFL journalist anytime soon. Unless the investigation is completed and she is given the all-clear, it is likely that she will be away from the spotlight for a long time.
Mike Vrabel’s absence from media briefings could now prompt questions
The problem with Russini’s decision is that it will have a proportionate impact on Mike Vrabel. The head coach has avoided the New England Patriots’ pre-draft media sessions, but now that could lead to more questions.

If fans and the general public believe that The Athletic insider was guilty, as her decision to quit proves, then so is the three-time Super Bowl champion linebacker.
It is possible that reporters will wait with questions until the next moment he is available. His job is such that he cannot stay away from the limelight for an extensive period of time.
If he does, it could swing both ways. On one hand, ducking from facing questions could give further proof that he, too, is guilty. On the other hand, staying away for long could force the narratives to fade away, after which Mike Vrabel could come back into the spotlight.
