Undefeated American fighter Tatiana Suarez is set to face the reigning 155-pound champion Zhang Weili at UFC 312. However, before this matchup, there are several intriguing aspects of Suarez’s journey to the UFC worth exploring.

Tatiana Suarez was born in California, USA, but she has a Mexican heritage. From a young age, she showed a strong interest in wrestling. During her college years, she achieved several accolades and championship victories in the sport. Notably, in 2011, Suarez was ranked as the number one freestyle wrestler in the country in the 121-pound weight class.

Due to her exceptional talent in the sport, Suarez was close to realizing her dreams of competing in the Olympic Games. However, one of the darkest chapters of the California-born fighter’s life unfolded when she suffered a neck injury at the age of 21 while training for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the scans revealed a serious and potentially fatal condition affecting Suarez.

Suarez was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent radiation therapy, as well as the removal of her thyroid and several lymph nodes. Fortunately, after a successful operation, the California-born fighter survived the illness. Following her recovery, she transitioned into MMA and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Now, years later, Suarez actively competes in the top MMA promotion, the UFC.
