Donald Trump refused to leave the stage after presenting Spain with the World Cup trophy. Despite Gianni Infantino’s best efforts, the US President stayed and took photos.
Trump handed out medals to the winners, Spain, after they defeated Argentina 1-0 in New York on Sunday. Trump also presented the World Cup trophy to the winning captain, Rodri.
Cameras filmed Rodri escorting Trump off the stage so that he could celebrate with his teammates. But Trump stood at the corner of the stage.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s rushed to the spot, but Trump declined to move and stood there applauding while the Spanish team lifted the trophy beside him.
It’s not the first time Trump has crashed a winning team’s celebration. Last year, he remained standing close to the Chelsea team that won the Club World Cup trophy.
One year ago today, Chelsea won the Club World Cup, sparking one of the strangest trophy lifts of all time, with Donald Trump at the centre of them.

Before kickoff, Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino were booed by the New York crowd. The pair watched the game from a VIP viewing area protected by reinforced glass.
Argentina entered Sunday’s final as the favorites to retain their world champion’s title. They defeated England in the semis thanks to a couple of assists from star player Lionel Messi. Spain, meanwhile, defeated France in the other semi-final game.
The game at MetLife Stadium/New Jersey Stadium remained goal-less after ninety minutes of football. But there were a few key moments that shaped the finale. Toward the end of the second half, the referee showed a red card to Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a reckless challenge. Rodri squandered a chance from distance, blazing his shot into the bleachers.
The drama continued in the first half of extra time. Nico Williams thought he had broken the deadlock, but the referee disallowed the goal after noticing a foul in the buildup.

Spain eventually took the lead through Ferran Torres. The ten-man Argentina looked helpless and frustrated by their performance. And that frustration boiled over after the final whistle. Argentina’s Leandro Paredes was sent off for throwing Gavi to the ground.
Donald Trump wants the USA to host another World Cup
The World Cup happens every four years. With the North America hosting this year’s edition, they have to wait for their turn to arrive in 2038.

But it doesn’t guarantee the USA will be one of the host countries that year. Trump isn’t giving up.
I had a great idea for Gianni [Infantino]. I said: ‘You have to do two countries. So, announce us for next time, and then announce another country after that and it’ll take out some of the anger and the shock!’ Now I think it’s a great idea. Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately. I said, to take out the shock, you could announce another country for the next one… but we have to do this again. You hear that, Gianni?
