Dream11 platform reportedly banned in Andhra Pradesh

According to a report from ‘Gulte’, Dream11, the sports fantasy app which is also the title sponsor of the ongoing Indian Premier League has been banned in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Dream11 is an online sports fantasy app where users can earn money by making a team and entering contests.

The app resembles betting but Dream11 have dismissed it saying it is a ‘gaming’ app. While this news of the ban is not verified yet, Dream11 itself has talked of the ban on its customer support page.

Dream11’s official statement

The company said, “Due to recent changes to the Gaming Act in the State of Andhra Pradesh, users from Andhra Pradesh will not be able to join paid contests on Dream11. The laws in Assam, Odisha, Telangana, Nagaland and Sikkim are unclear on games of skills may be played for a fee. Hence, residents of these states are also not permitted to play pay-to-play formats of any online games.”

It is not clear as to when Dream 11 put out this notice, but according to ‘Gulte’, users from Andhra Pradesh were finding the same notice in their Dream 11 apps.

Gulte wrote, “From the beginning of the current season of IPL, there were reports in the media that the AP government will also place a ban on the app as Telangana already did a couple of years ago. However, a lot of people started playing fantasy cricket already by loading their wallets with money. This sudden move has now pushed them into a dilemma state, worrying about the money in the wallets.”
