Victor Wembanyama announced himself to the NBA world last season. After leading the San Antonio Spurs to a second place finish in the Western Conference standings, he took them to the NBA Finals for the first time in 12 years.

The French star was drafted by the Spurs as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA draft. He entered the league as the most hyped prospect since LeBron James in 2003.

In his third season, he took the NBA by storm and showed everyone why he is the next face of the league. Not only has he exceeded the hype and expectations so far, he has arguably even outperformed James in terms of career trajectory.

Former NBA champion Dwyane Wade explained why he wants to see Wembanyama fulfill his potential on his podcast.

I want Wemby to be so great, because he should be. I want him to win five, six, however many rings and finals MVPs and regular season MVPs. I want to live and say, ‘I saw that.’

Dwyane Wade is one of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history. He knows what greatness looks like as he played alongside James for four and a half seasons in Miami and Cleveland.

The three-time champion has praised the Spurs center for his “old school” mentality in the past and believes that he can be one of the most successful players in NBA history.

In just his third season, Wembanyama finished top-three in the MVP race and became the first ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year. Coming off an impressive 2025-26 campaign, many believe that he is set to overtake Michael Jordan and James in the GOAT debate in the future.

Wade wants to be able to claim he was alive to witness Wembanyama’s greatness. Barring any serious injuries, the French prodigy is well on course of being the most successful player ever.

There is no doubt that Wembanyama is destined for greatness. Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady has already labeled him as the “face of the league” and believes he is the best two-way player in the league.

The young star signed a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension with the Spurs in the offseason. Wembanyama and the Spurs are set to dominate the league for the next decade if everything goes according to plan.

Former Spurs champion, Tony Parker, heaped praise on his fellow Frenchman and believes that he will be one of the greatest player of all time.

I feel like he has all the tools to become one of the best ever, and it’s just a matter of time before he starts winning championships, and hopefully he can bring a lot of championships for the Spurs and a lot of gold medals for the French national team. He’s unique too in his approach to the game and how he stays ready mentally.

He has already established himself as the best defensive player in the league after leading the league in blocked shots for a third consecutive season. Last season, he recorded career-high numbers in points and rebounds as he averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks in 64 appearances.

The 22-year-old broke a few records in his first ever playoffs. Despite the Spurs’ impressive regular season, there were doubts surrounding them before the postseason due to their lack of playoff experience.

However, Wembanyama and the Spurs silenced their critics and reached the NBA Finals by taking out the defending champions, Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games.

After a disappointing loss to the New York Knicks in five games in the Final, Wembanyama will be looking to go one better next season. This coming season could be the year he breaks through and wins his first MVP and NBA championship.
