The Eden Gardens, established in 1864, is the oldest cricket stadium in India. With a seating capacity of 66,000, it is also the second-largest stadium in India. It is the home of the two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The stadium first underwent renovation in 1987 and its capacity, which was previously 40,000, was expanded to 100,000 for the 1987 World Cup. It again underwent renovation for the 2011 World Cup, and the seating capacity was then reduced to 68,000.
In total, the stadium has staged 15 World Cup matches (men and women) across formats. This also hosted four finals (1987 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20Is, 1997 Women’s World Cup, and 2016 Women’s T20I World Cup).
Apart from cricket, Eden Gardens hosts football matches. The legendary Pelé had played here in 1977 for the New York Cosmos against India’s iconic club Mohun Bagan.

Talking about IPL records, the home team recorded the highest innings total of 232 in 2019 against Mumbai Indians. The Royal Challengers Bangalore scored a humiliating 49 runs (the lowest total in IPL history) in 2017.
Gautam Gambhir, who led the KKR to two trophies (2012 and 2014), is the leading run-scorer (1407). RCB’s Rajat Patidar smashed his maiden ton here (112 off 54 balls) which is also the highest individual score at this venue.

Eden Gardens will host its first match of this year’s IPL when KKR will clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 6. Iyer was to lead the side, but now the KKR are searching for another captain.
