Egypt had a sensational run in their Group B games of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. Having won four out of their five games with a goal difference of 20, they finished second in the points table below Denmark. Their only defeat by 27-32 came against Denmark itself.

In the semi-final on Thursday, a lot was expected of them, but they ended up losing 23-27 at the hands of France. Egypt held nerve in the first half, as they tied 13-13 with their opponent. But France won the second half 14-10 to end Egypt’s aim for a gold medal.

Spain, on the other hand, made a thunderous start to the tournament. Barring their 31-36 defeat against France on July 30, the team has looked at its very best. They finished Group A at the top of the table with eight points and a goal difference of 13.

After edging past Sweden by a whisker in the quarter-final, Spain lost 23-27 at the hands of Denmark. Spain were pushed onto the back foot in the first half itself as they trailed 10-14. Though they fought hard in the second set, Denmark turned out to be insurmountable.
