England interim manager Lee Carsley has taken charge of The Three Lions and has released his first-ever squad. The 26-man contingent includes quite a lot of big names, although many were surprised to learn that Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Ollie Watkins will play no part in his team. The trio have been sent back to their respective clubs and will not be a part of the squad that faces Ireland and Finland.
It is understood that all three players failed to meet fitness requirements during assessment. While Palmer and Ollie Watkins were sent back from the camp to continue their rehabilitation, Foden did not report due to injury. While both Palmer and Watkins played games at club level less than five days ago, Foden hasn’t made an appearance for the Cityzens in over two weeks.
Carsley takes charge of England just 55 days after Gareth Southgate‘s final game in charge at the Euros. The Three Lions heartbreakingly missed out on the title to Spain. As for Carsley, the 50-year-old is a former Republic of Ireland international and has also managed the England U21 squad.
It is understood that he will be in charge of all six of The Three Lions’ Nations League fixtures until they find a permanent replacement for the position.
Lee Carsley praises England’s line-up of young talent, hails them for their confidence
England had to rely a lot on young players at the Euros to churn out results. From Cole Palmer to Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka, The Three Lions have a relatively younger composition to the squad. As Carsley prepares to take charge of his first-ever game for the national team, he expressed that he intends to do the same during his tenure in charge.
Carsley stressed that the new generation of footballers are better equipped to deal with pressure and take it in their stride. Fans recalled the iconic piece of commentary by Alan Shearer as England beat Switzerland on penalties at the Euros. Carsley led the English U21 side to the European championship last year and has quite some experience working with youngsters.
He claimed that his players were so laid back that he felt the need to remind them to be nervous. Carsley also singled out Noni Madueke, who scored a brilliant hat-trick right after calling the city of Wolverhampton s*** on Instagram. The 22-year-old has also been called up after an impressive opening to the season with Chelsea.
