Snapshots are early access versions of the game that are still under development and can offer a preview of upcoming releases. 23w04A is the most recent snapshot for Minecraft Java Edition. Mojang Studios release snapshots for players who play the Java edition to let them experience which will be added in the coming big update. They unveil a bunch of new changes and features in the next big update on their “Minecraft Live” stream.

Players now can get their hands on the upcoming 23w03 snapshot. It includes not all but some major upcoming features in the 1.20 update. Players can test these by themselves and can send feedback to Mojang to improve. This snapshot release will definitely hype up the 1.20 update.

Experimental Feature

  • Devs Has added a new Armor trimming system that will let players customize their armor visually.
  • New Smithing Template items are added
  • The Smithing Table has been Redesigned
  • Devs changed the process for crafting Netherite items.

New Changes

  • Devs have added an enchantment glint for items and made armor more subtle.

Smithing Templates

Players can now add a brand-new kind of object known as a Smithing Template to the smithing table’s new slot. This snapshot includes two categories: armour trim and netherite upgrading. Smithing templates specify the kind of equipment improvement. Smithing Templates will be consumed when players upgrade an item in the Smithing Table. Players can also craft these Smithing Templates in the Crafting Table. For doing so, players need 7 diamonds, 1 block of the material it is constructed of, and 1 Smithing Template, yielding 2 of the same Smithing Template.

Netherite Equipment

  • Players now need Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in order to craft Netherite equipment. Players can find Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in all Bastion Remnant chests.

Minecraft Devs gave a reason for this change. They stated that they want to make obtaining Netherite equipment a bigger deal as the game progresses. Also, they want to integrate Netherite into the new Smithing Table crafting system more naturally.

Armor Trims

Players now will be able to customize all the defensive gears except leather armor. Although, Trimming armor won’t affect the gameplay or provide any benefits. That means it’s just for cosmetic changes. You can find Armor trim Smithing Templates in many different structures in Minecraft. One thing to note is that each structure offers a unique Armor trim template. These are structures that have their unique Smithing Template:

  • Pillager Outpost: Sentry Armor Trim
  • Desert Pyramid: Dune Armor Trim
  • Shipwreck: Coast Armor Trim
  • Jungle Temple: Wild Armor Trim
  • Ocean Monument: Tide Armor Trim
  • Ancient City: Ward Armor Trim
  • Woodland Mansion: Vex Armor Trim
  • Nether Fortress: Rib Armor Trim
  • Bastion Remnant: Snout Armor Trim
  • Stronghold: Eye Armor Trim
  • End City: Spire Armor Trim

Elden Guardians drop a Smithing Template after dying. Some Armor Trim Smithing Templates are quite rare so they will be a great flex on other players. You can use these items for your armor trim color:

  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Lapis
  • Emerald
  • Diamond
  • Netherite
  • Redstone
  • Amethyst
  • Quartz

You cannot use the armor trim of the same material as the armor itself. For example, You cannot apply golden armor trim on a golden chest plate.

Few bug fixes in Minecraft 23w04A Snapshot

  • MC-198809 – Blast Protection does not reduce explosion knockback except at very high levels
  • MC-259189 – “Narrator: Not Available” isn’t grayed out on the accessibility splash
  • MC-259204 – All goat horns display as Ponder goat horns and play the Ponder instrument
  • MC-259211 – You cannot select incompatible resource packs within the resource packs menu via keyboard navigation
