Video games have seen quite a considerable boom in popularity recently. Furthermore, almost every year, games are coming up that totally sweep away the market. And console sales like PlayStation and Xbox are at an all-time high. Many developers are working on sequels to some of their really successful games to appease their fan base. One such series is The Witcher series. Moreover, there is chatter of the 4th part of the series in development, Witcher 4 Polaris!

Projekt CD Red, the studio behind Cyberpunk and the Witcher series, is famous among fans. Furthermore, a while back, there were even rumors of Sony’s acquisition of the studio, but they turned out to be false. Additionally, the past few years have been really hectic for CDPR, as their hands were totally full of Cyberpunk-related content. Cyberpunk 2077 is now a phenomenal game; however, when released, it wasn’t so.

The game had many bugs & glitches, which CDPR has worked on and has now perfected the game. Moreover, CDPR also released the DLC of Cyberpunk, Phantom Liberty, and fans loved it! So now, CDPR has finally jumped back on the next Witcher part, Witcher 4 Polaris! And fans are eagerly expecting any news related to the game!

4th upcoming entry in the Witcher series, Witcher 4 Polaris— Everything we know so far

Under the codename Witcher 4: Polaris, CD Projekt Red is developing the 4th entry in the Witcher series. Furthermore, the Witcher 4 development is now accelerating as Cyberpunk 2077 finally comes to an end with the release of Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty DLC, according to the company’s most recent financial report. Although CDPR has not confirmed whether the Polaris tag would stick around or not, Witcher 4 is going to be an epic title!

According to CDPR, The Witcher Polaris is the first of a brand-new AAA RPG trilogy. Therefore, The Witcher 4 will be the “first game” of a multi-game story, regardless of the name it eventually gets!

New Witcher Trilogy starting with Witcher 4 Polaris? All currently known regarding the development of Witcher 4

On October 4, 2022, CDPR provided an update regarding The Witcher 4. The upcoming game’s internal codename, The Witcher Polaris, was disclosed as part of the story. The next match of the series is in pre-production, and CDPR has announced that it will mark the “beginning of a new saga.” The company said, “We aim to release two more Witcher games after Polaris, creating a new AAA RPG trilogy.”

Moreover, over half the CDPR team is now working on developing Witcher 4, so fans can expect something awe-inspiring. Witcher 3 was a gaming phenomenon, and it’s still a fantastic game. The third part of the series even won the Game of the Year award in 2015, the year CDPR released the game!

Furthermore, CDPR is developing Witcher 4 Polaris on Unreal Engine 5 rather than its proprietary RED engine. Furthermore, CDPR declared in May that The Witcher 4’s “research phase” was over. Adam Kiciński stated during an investor call that The Witcher 4: Polaris won’t be out for at least three years (as per reports from IGN). With the switch to Unreal Engine 5 and the creation of new technologies, the CDPR joint-CEO clarified that “for this project, we need some extra effort to deliver.”

Developer CD Projekt Red effectively announced in a Q&A with investors earlier this year that fans shouldn’t anticipate a Witcher 4: Polaris release date until 2025. Regarding the new trilogy’s development schedule, CDPR President Adam Kiciński provided the following explanation:

“For Polaris, we are preparing technologies. This is the first project to be released on the new engine, Unreal 5. There is a need of some extra work making this technology viable for huge, open-world, story-driven games. So for this project, for sure, we need some extra effort to deliver. The second and the third installments should go smoother as technology will be better and the tools and the pipelines will be there, but this is all I can say for now.”

So fans can expect a 2025 or 2026 release window! However, it’s not that far off now.

Witcher 4 Polaris teaser image: School of the Lynx Medallion?

The teaser image used to verify The Witcher 4’s existence is the only complex information currently known about the game. Half of a medallion shaped like a cat was stuck in the snow. Compared to Geralt’s wolf medallion, this medallion is different and thus corresponds with CD Projekt Red’s declaration that this is a “new saga for the franchise.”

CD Projekt Red has verified via Twitter that the School of the Lynx owns the medallion after the photograph was leaked. Robert Malinowski, head of worldwide communications for CD Projekt Red, echoed this, saying that “some mysteries should not be so mysterious. I can confirm that the medallion is shaped after a lynx.”

There’s lots of opportunity for a brand-new storyline here. Since the School of the Lynx is more heavily based on fan fiction and footnotes than the official Witcher canon, it is an intriguing proposition.

Witcher 4 Polaris: Possible storyline?

If The Witcher 4’s plot centers on the School of the Lynx, it appears that it will be related to fanfiction. Although Geralt’s School of the Wolf and other Schools of the Manticore, Bear, Griffin, Crane, and Viper exist in the novels and games, Ciri has always been connected to the School of the Cat—not the Lynx, though.

However, fanfiction that has been uploaded to an unofficial Witcher Wiki is where the Lynx may be found. The author suggests that after the Battle of Kaer Morhen, Witch Keira Metz and Witch Lambert founded the School of the Lynx. They transformed the Cat School into the new Witcher training facility and School of the Lynx.

Furthermore, there have also been talks of the Witch 4 returning to Temeria and Vizima after the Battle of Kaer Morhen! So, where the story may lead is a surprise and suspense right now. The plot can take an entire U-turn or a different route.

There’s a lot less known about Witcher 4 Polaris right now. However, as development moves forward, more details will emerge. As of right now, the development teams are fully engaged in working on the game. So, more news will come to light quite soon!
