RPG Nominees for The Game Awards 2023
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 has had everyone in the gaming industry discussing it since the game came out. The game seamlessly blends the rich lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons with narrative brilliance and intricate gameplay systems. The game’s strength lies in its freedom of choice, giving you a wide range of options in any given situation. This is a must-play not just for RPG fans but for all gamers.
Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy has been a beloved series in gamers’ hearts for nearly 35 years! The series has been nominated twice this year, for RPG and Mobile Game of the Year. Square Enix has taken the series in a different direction with a mature and gritty narrative. The visuals are stunning, as always, with the game set in a world of political intrigue and magical conflict. The game is a masterclass in storytelling as it tastefully touches on the theme of family, loss and the struggle for power.
Lies of P
Lies of P perfectly sets the tone for the game with its oppressive atmosphere, dilapidated buildings, grotesque animations and eerie sound design. The game is visually stunning as it perfectly captures the story’s essence. Its challenging and punishing gameplay draws heavily from the Dark Souls games. Pinochhio’s story is intriguing and will have you on the edge of your seat throughout your entire gameplay. It is no surprise that it has been nominated for The Game Awards 2023.
Sea of Stars
Sea of Stars will take you back in time with its 16-bit graphics. The 2D-pixel art heavily works heavily in the game’s favour as it blends into the diverse landscapes. The soundtrack perfectly complements the game and will have you bopping your head. The turn-based combat system provides a strategic depth to the game. Sea of Stars perfectly captures the essence of classic RPGs.
Starfield
If there is any game developer who knows how to make RPGs, it is Bethesda Studios. The brilliant minds behind Elder Scrolls have adopted a different theme for this game that takes place in outer space. Everything from the freedom to carve your story to the combat system and the stunning visuals are perfectly crafted in Starfield. While this may not have satiated our thirst for a new Elder Scrolls, it comes close.
Prediction
Baldur’s Gate 3 is by far the favourite to win the RPG Game of the Year 2023. The game is a strong contender to win Game of the Year regardless of genre, so winning the RPG Game of the Year seems like a sweep. The game has sold over 22 million copies and scored a 96 on Metacritic. While Starfield can potentially pull an upset, it is doubtful.
