Georginio Wijnaldum will take command of the Dutch national football team for the Euro 2020 which is all set to begin from 11th June in Rome. Wijnaldum takes up the captaincy from his former Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk, who is out of the competition due to a long-term knee injury. Wijnaldum is one of the most accomplished players in a quite young Netherlands side, and he is now expected to lead the Oranje to Euro 2020 and foreseeable future.
In the absence of Van Dijk, Wijnaldum has performed admirably and will be crucial to his country’s chances of victory in the upcoming days.
Wijnaldum is expected to join Paris Saint Germain after the end of his contract with Liverpool. During his five years with Liverpool, he won a slew of silverware, including the Champions League and the Premier League’s first title. However, The mid-fielder has contributed far more for his nation than he has for Liverpool.
He made his debut for the Netherlands in 2011 against San Marino and has represented them in 73 matches so far scoring 22 goals in the process. The majority of these goals have occurred in the recent few years, including eight in seven Euro qualification games. Wijnaldum scored a double against Belarus and a hat-trick in his debut game as captain to hammer Estonia by 5-0.
Wijnaldum has been a huge contributor to the Netherlands and would want his team to excel at the mega event. They missed out on the last two major tournaments with the 2014 FIFA World Cup being their last appearance where they ended third.
