Red Bull has been under a constant frenzy since the start of the 2024 season. The team supremo was alleged for behaving inappropriately with a colleague, leading to rifts forming between the team. This eventually resulted in design wizard Adrian Newey announcing his departure from the team. He was subsequently rumored to join Ferrari, but it seems that Lawrence Stroll was able to persuade the Brit by giving him a hefty salary.
Adrian Newey began his journey in F1 in the 80’s. He soon became one of the most revered designers as cars designed by him began bringing in championships. The 65-year-old then switched to Red Bull in 2006 and had an impressive stint with the team. However, due to the chaos within the team, the Englishman decided to leave the team and find a home elsewhere on the grid.
Subsequently, Newey became the hottest property available on the transfer market. He was then eyed out by Aston Martin executive chairman Lawrence Stroll for its large-scale F1 project with the aid of Honda in 2026.
According to Autosprint, this led to negotiations beginning between the two parties, which ended with Newey agreeing to a salary of $100 million for four years! Moreover, it is speculated that the decision would be announced in September due to legal intricacies as the Brit prepares to move from Milton Keynes to Silverstone.
Could Adrian Newey’s move to Aston Martin attract other star members?
The 65-year-old’s designs have amassed more than two dozen championships. His departure is understood to tempt other crucial members of the team to move to the Silverstone-based outfit. However, it is speculated that Max Verstappen could be moving to the British squad if Newey’s transfer is a done-and-dusted deal.
The Italian news outlet further claimed that Stroll is keen on poaching the Dutchman from the Austrian giant. On the contrary, the reigning champion is currently contracted to Red Bull till the end of 2028 and Mercedes is ready to convince him to move to Brackley if he becomes available on the driver market.
Thus, Newey’s move could be the first piece in a domino sequence which could lead to further reshuffling of the grid. So it remains in the air whether Verstappen would be repping the Mercedes’ or Aston Martin’s overalls next year if he decides to leave his former alliance.
