McLaren has made incredible progress in the past few months. Lando Norris even managed to defeat Max Verstappen at the Miami GP to take his first-ever victory in Formula 1. However, McLaren team boss Andrea Stella has affirmed that the Woking-based team has much higher ambitions than to just win a single race.
Stella highlighted Norris’ stellar victory in Miami. The McLaren boss claimed that despite bagging a few podiums this season, the British team wanted to replicate Red Bull’s dominate success at the pinnacle of motorsport. Milton Keynes has won three consecutive drivers’ title with Max Verstappen alongside two constructors’ championships.
We have won a race, we have scored a few podiums, but let's look at what Red Bull has achieved, we have the ambition to be there one day.Andrea Stella told RacingNews365
Andrea Stella understood that it would not be easy for McLaren to move up the pecking order. The 53-year-old admitted that was a mountain to climb if the team wanted to achieve its ambitious targets for the future. The Woking-based team would need to continue working on in-season upgrades to out-develop Red Bull’s RB20.
But when we see where we are at the moment, it is like there is a full mountain to climb to be where they are.Andrea Stella admitted
Andrea Stella claims ‘no secret’ behind McLaren’s recent rise
McLaren has turned things around in recent years after a terrible stint with Honda which lasted till 2017. The Woking-based team made steady progress in the midfield before truly becoming a contender for victories this season.
Andrea Stella claimed that there was no real secret to the team’s recent success. Although, the Italian affirmed that he would not have revealed such a secret if there was one. Nevertheless, the McLaren boss asserted that Woking was using this period to celebrate its results and to look back at how the crew made it possible.
There is no special secret I am afraid, but if there was, I wouldn't say. The reality is that there is no secret, but we are definitely using this period, in which we could enjoy some good results at the start of the season.Andrea Stella stated
Certainly, McLaren might be a threat to Max Verstappen and Red Bull for the world title this season. Lando Norris could potentially challenge the reigning world champion for more victories in the coming races. Fans would love to see a fight between Verstappen and Norris for the world title.
