Carlos Sainz raced for McLaren in 2019 and 2020 before moving to Scuderia Ferrari. The Spaniard’s former team emerged as the constructors’ champions last year. Now, the 30-year-old has claimed that he knew the British team would succeed in the sport.

Sainz had left McLaren to replace Sebastian Vettel at the Scuderia for 2021. Back then, Ferrari seemed to be a much better bet compared to the Woking-based team which was still stuck in the midfield. Nevertheless, Carlos Sainz insisted that he knew there were smart people at the British squad who would win titles in the future.

I remember that when I left McLaren I really thought there were smart people and that that team could become world champion in the future.

When McLaren did defeat Ferrari to take the constructors’ title last year, the Spanish driver was happy to see his prediction come true. As such, Sainz regained confidence in his own instincts at a time when he was yet to decide over his future for 2025 after being ousted by Maranello for Lewis Hamilton.

Last year McLaren actually graduated world champion and I said to myself: ‘Ok, I have to trust my instincts.’

Carlos Sainz’s instincts led to Williams switch

Sainz had multiple offers for 2025, including Audi and Alpine. However, the 30-year-old decided to take a bet on James Vowles’ Williams Racing. Following McLaren’s rise, Carlos Sainz realized that his instincts signaled that the Grove-based team would be the right place to go. He pointed out that the team had the right people and good project plan.

I know Williams has a good project: they have support and good people. And in the end, this combination of two things pushed me to believe in Williams.

Carlos Sainz stated

Certainly, Carlos Sainz will play a key role in Williams’ rise in the F1 midfield this year. The Spanish driver is hungry for success and would hope he can take his new team back to the front in the coming years. Although, this will not be an easy task that could take a couple of years to achieve.
