Red Bull was expected to put forth a similar dominant campaign to its performance in the 2023 season. However, the team introduced a radical change in the RB20 which caused their downfall in performance. Hence, the Austrian constructor is desperately losing the running to the rival teams mid-way through the season. Christian Horner has voiced his concerns with the slump in performance and noted other team’s upturn.

Max Verstappen had continued to put forth his disappointment with the RB20’s performance throughout the season. Regardless, the team continued to work on the challenger in hopes of improving its output. However, other teams have already overtaken Red Bull and they are under real threat of losing the constructors championship.

Amidst this, Christian Horner claimed that the rival teams unlocked more performance since the previous season. Hence, Horner pointed out that Milton Keynes’ downfall was more due to their rivals unlocking more performance. Subsequently, the 50-year-old pinpointed the front wing to be the ‘key area’ where the rivals had better performance.

I think it’s more where have the others found performance? I think [the] front wing is a key area where others have found some performance.

McLaren and Mercedes’ front wing was used ‘very differently’

Christian Horner further noted that McLaren and Mercedes were the two teams with the best performance so far. The reason for this was that the two outfits were using their front wings very differently. This key change made all the difference in chassis performance for these teams than the rest of the grid, according to Horner.

I think that the way the front wings are being used are quite different. If you look at the front wing angle of McLaren and Mercedes, they’re very, very different. Very different to that rest of the grid.

Red Bull is currently just 30 points ahead of McLaren after their massive upturn in performance. Hence, the upcoming Italian GP is extremely important for Milton Keynes to maintain their lead. The Austrian constructor could be ousted from the top spot for the first time since the beginning of the ground-effect era.
