Red Bull has often seemed tangled in heaps of problems during its 2024 campaign. Initially, Adrian Newey announced his departure from the team, and the slump in performance by Sergio Perez has hampered the outfit’s progress in the constructor’s standings. However, Christian Horner implied the disobedient nature of the RB20 to be having a larger impact on the Mexican than Max Verstappen amidst the team’s decline in performance.

McLaren was over 100 points behind Red Bull in the constructor’s standings after the race in Miami, where the Woking-based outfit brought its first phase of upgrades. However, this lead has now shrunk down to just eight points, and the English team is on course to overtake the Austrian giant this weekend. Despite this, Max Verstappen had been able to perform strongly after the papaya outfit became the faster car, leading to a debate rising within the paddock about whether Sergio Perez deserves his seat.

However, this debacle soon tapered off as the reigning champion complained about the problems with the RB20. It caused Horner to explain how the car’s woes have affected the 34-year-old more than his world-champion teammate.

The car imbalance issue has greater effects to Checo than Max, both drivers are talking about the same characteristics and affects them at a different degree.
Christian Horner said in an interview

The 50-year-old elaborated that the RB20 imbalance issues have been amplified at the Mexican’s end. Furthermore, he stated that Verstappen complained about similar stuff that Perez did, but their criticism differed in the degree of severity.

Sergio Perez puts his utmost faith in Red Bull

On the other hand, Perez is known as the king of the streets in Baku owing to him being the only driver to have won around the track more than once. Moreover, the race around the street circuit could be a chance for the six-time race winner to reassert his status in the paddock after the questions raised about his worthiness on the grid.

Moreover, Perez finished with the second-best time in FP2, expressing his strength around the 6-kilometer track.

I think we’re heading into the right direction that we can put a little bit more together with the car, it’s still a long way to go but it’s promising with what we’ve seen so far. Anything can happen tomorrow so we’re just have to keep our head down and get a couple of good laps, well, you only need one good lap going into Q3.
Sergio Perez said in an interview with Sky F1

The Red Bull driver reckoned that the team was heading in the right direction. He admitted that the result in FP2 does not mean a lot, but they have shown promising signs ahead of the race. This has increased his morale heading into the race and would be hoping to help the Austrian team taste the victory champagne again.

Apart from this, the Mexican knows about the importance of the Dutchman winning the driver’s championship and has revealed that he would give his all to help Verstappen in the title fight. So McLaren would have to fight two drivers to help Lando Norris in the championship. Making the title fight even more interesting.
