Lando Norris is falling short of his teammate, Oscar Piastri, in terms of performance on the grid as he lost the lead of the drivers’ title early on. The Briton committed major mistakes on multiple occasions that caused him to fall in the pecking order. Norris has also made some controversial comments on his performance in the recent races, which caused him to receive a lot of hate. Now, the 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill has shared his opinion on the 25-year-old’s wrongly perceived image in the minds of the people.

Oscar Piastri has showcased very impressive results this year, especially against Lando Norris, who is running in the same chassis. Now, amidst his trying times, Norris will need to remain humble in his approach to the media and ensure that people do not take his comments in the wrong manner. The 25-year-old has not provided a tough time to Piastri or raced him unnecessarily hard, which might have sabotaged his own race on some occasions.

Damon Hill points out that Lando Norris is still making comments about being the nice guy. The 25-year-old wants to score race wins but still maintain his image of being a good person. However, being a great guy does not convert into impressive results while on the track; Norris needs to remain effective in his approach. The Briton must remain ‘clinical’ in his approach against drivers like Max Verstappen to ensure his position at the top. The Dutchman is prepared to give it his all in a struggling Red Bull challenger and is still performing relatively better than Norris.

He [Lando Norris] makes comments like, ‘I still want to win. I still want to be a nice guy’. Well, that’s not about being nice. It’s about being effective. It’s about being clinical in how you deal with someone like Max, he’s not going to give it to you.

Hill also made a ‘penny that needs to drop’ remark on Lando Norris’ performances against Max Verstappen, meaning that the former still fails to understand the intensity of battling against the Dutchman. The one-time champion recalled the 2024 Austrian GP, where the two collided with one another, nearly ending both their races, with the Briton desperately falling behind the leading pack. The Englishman revealed that the 25-year-old put himself in a vulnerable position and wasn’t up to the mark in competing back then.

I think there’s a penny that needs to drop, I get the sense with him. When you think back to Austria last year, when he was fighting with Max, he kind of put himself in vulnerable positions and he came off worse.

Lando Norris makes ‘you can’t win’ remark on social media hatred

Lando Norris has remained under scrutiny, especially on Social media, due to his controversial takes on multiple matters. The Briton has continued to speak ill of Max Verstappen on multiple occasions, which has caused this hate against him. However, now that the 25-year-old is seemingly performing much better and being humble on the grid, the hate still follows.

Upon this, Lando Norris reckons that the people complain regardless of whether he gets the job done or not. This meant that he could never win those who kept on criticizing him despite his performances improving on the grid. Norris still made a controversial take on Max Verstappen, claiming that one had to either crash or not pass the latter in order to compete. A driver needed to put themselves in that perfect position if they wanted to pass Verstappen on the grid.

If I don’t go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain. So, you can’t win. But it’s the way it is with Max – it’s crash or don’t pass. Unless you get it really right and you put him in the perfect position, then you can just about get there.

Lando Norris said in a post-race press conference at Miami GP

The 2025 season has peaked in competition and excitement at the forefront as multiple teams and drivers seem ready for the championship battle. Verstappen has kept up with his efforts to improve on the grid despite McLaren clearly being the team to beat. On the other hand, Norris must minimize errors by a big margin if he wants to maintain his position in the drivers’ standings. Time will tell about how the 25-year-old builds the gap to the Dutchman behind him.
