Lando Norris has found himself in contention for the 2024 F1 world championship against Max Verstappen. The British driver has delivered consistent results with McLaren this season, but trails behind Verstappen. Now, former F1 champion Damon Hill has shared his thoughts over the two going head-to-head this season.

Hill reckoned that its better for a driver to have a points advantage in such situations. Presently, Max Verstappen leads Norris by 52 points with six races to go. However, the former F1 champion insisted that Lando Norris had nothing to lose as he was chasing the Dutch driver.

I think that it’s better to have the advantage and protect it. You’ve got nothing to lose if you’re chasing, but at the same time you’re behind.

Nevertheless, Damon Hill doubled down on his stance that it is Verstappen who is in a better place compared to the McLaren driver. As the three-time world champion can afford losing out to Norris on a couple of occasions without losing the lead of the championship.

So it’s always a better position to be in, to have those points.

Damon Hill highlighted that tension is a part of racing, and no driver can avoid it. Rather, one must learn how to cope in such circumstances and get the best out of themselves on the track. Hill further reckoned that Max Verstappen has everything to lose against Norris. As the Dutch driver has dominated Formula 1 in the ground-effect era.

In motorsport, there’s tension. You can’t avoid it. So it’s the ability to cope with tension, to cope with pressure… Max has got it all to lose.

Damon Hill asserted

Certainly, Verstappen was the favorite for the world title at the start of the season. The 27-year-old won seven of the first ten races. However, things have changed since then. Now, it seems that Max Verstappen will need to fight tooth and nail with Norris to defend the F1 world title.
