Former F1 driver David Coulthard expressed his concerns about the underlying negativity towards Max Verstappen, despite his achievements in Formula 1. The three-time world champion’s aggressive racing style and outspoken personality often attract criticism. Especially since the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP where the critics believe he robbed the championship, by defeating Lewis Hamilton in controversial circumstances.

David Coulthard believed that some people have a deep-seated dislike for Max Verstappen and his success in Formula 1. He pointed out that these critics often make excuses, claiming that Verstappen’s achievements are only due to driving the best car. Coulthard highlighted that in sports, the focus should be on recognizing exceptional talent and performance, regardless of the circumstances. He reckoned, Verstappen deserved credit for his skills and determination, rather than being held back by others opinions.

Only those that really have an underlying dislike of him and his success and those that look for, he's been in the best car, he's been all the excuse makers. Sports has always been about finding exceptional.

Further, David Coulthard exceptional athletes or drivers like Verstappen are not always perfect and do make mistakes occasionally. He stated that these personalities are also humans after all, so it’s natural if they make any mistakes. Coulthard mentioned, excuse book of these drivers is very thin, meaning they don’t rely on many excuses when things go wrong.
