Formula 1 witnessed a controversial 2024 season. The FIA sparked controversy after banning drivers from swearing in the paddock. The sports governing body has also issued new rules for the upcoming season. Now, the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) Chairman Alex Wurz has given his first response to the latest change.

The FIA will enforce stricter measures over drivers’ comments this year. A driver can face points deduction for even a race ban for criticizing actions of the sports governing body. These measures have divided opinions with some claiming that it is meant to silence dissent.

GPDA Chairman Alex Wurz revealed that drivers were not even consulted by the FIA over these rules. Rather, the drivers’ association came to know about the change via the media. Wurz highlighted that in sports such as the NFL, the players’ union is involved in such a process, something that is entirely missing from Formula 1.

No, there was no consultation. We have read that through the media… If there’s a comparison with, for example, the NFL in America, they do have unionization of NFL players, and they are involved in the process.

The GPDA Chairman admitted that it is difficult for a meeting of the association as drivers prepare for the start of the 2025 season. Many, such as Lewis Hamilton have just started working with their new teams. Nevertheless, Alex Wurz made it clear that the GPDA will soon convene to decide the next course of action in the coming weeks. Though, he did not specify when this meeting would take place.

We have not managed to get together. Drivers are in a very busy period, I don’t want to stress them… Of course, we’re going to get together. We’ll then convene and discuss what we are doing and what our course of action is.

Alex Wurz explained

Formula 1 could see further controversy in the upcoming season. Drivers might be furious over the FIA’s crackdown and resort to brief responses in press conferences, something done by Max Verstappen last year. However, it is clear that both sides will need to be on the same page to avoid further conflict.
