The Spanish GP weekend is home to Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. The latter has three wins on his home soil, with his last triumph being in 2013. On the other hand, this trend has found itself to come to a close as the Spaniard’s career move dictated his results in the following years. Moreover, a similar fate was observed at the qualifying for the Spanish GP, where the Aston Martin driver qualified P11 and was subsequently mocked by fans for his lack of pace.

Fernando Alonso is known for his ability to extract untapped performance from the machinery he is provided with. A glimpse of such pace was witnessed last season when for the first half of the season, the 42-year-old challenged the mighty Red Bulls for wins.

Fans mentioned the fact that both Alpines were able to make it into Q3. While a much faster Aston Martin was unable to break into the top 10 and was eliminated on the spot. This intrigued some fans to fire shots at him and claim that the 42-year-old should have retired in 2013 but remained focused on his inability to reach Q3.

Fernando Alonso explains his meeting with Ben Sulayem

While the former double champion was relegated out of qualifying in Q2. On the other hand, he had a meeting with FIA President Ben Sulayem behind closed doors regarding stewards’ preference for some nationalities and throwing other drivers under the bus.

The former world champion revealed details regarding his meeting with the FIA president.

I spoke with him[Ben Sulayem] and he’s always on board on every opinion that the drivers have. He knows that we are the ones driving the cars and that we can have some suggestions on things. There are a couple of points that we need to address as a sport. But he has always listened to us. Let’s see if we make F1 a better sport and a little bit more consistent.
Fernando Alonso said in an interview with The Times

Alonso elaborated that Sulayem is focused on driver’s opinions and cares about their perspectives. He further stated that the Emirati always listened to the driver’s concerns and was ready for a discussion with him.

Regardless of this, the paddock is currently focused on the Spaniard’s inability to get into the top-10 shootout. Moreover, his subpar qualifying performances had earlier led his teammate to claim that he was better than the former world champion. Thus, Alonso has the task at hand to prove his critics wrong and assert his leadership in the Aston Martin garage.
