As the F1 teams rolled up to Zandvoort, the realization of Lewis Hamilton‘s final races with Mercedes started to set in. This piled a bit of pressure on the Brit to give a farewell gift for his team before departing to Maranello. However, his dream was short-lived as he got knocked out in Q2, leading fans to lament and claim his recent performances to be in the mud.

Lewis Hamilton had raced on 37 tracks in his F1 career. He has won on 31 of them and Zandvoort remained a track where he had never won. On the other hand, the seven-time world champion won two of the last three races which motivated him to push for pole around Max Verstappen‘s home circuit.

However, Hamilton suffered from understeer throughout his final Q2 lap. This caused him to lose heaps of time and thus, he was only able to manage a 12th place finish.

Witnessing his drastic slump in performance, fans were shocked by the results. Subsequently, they claimed that Hamilton was no longer in his prime, others commented on how Ferrari messed up by replacing Carlos Sainz with another driver who was unable to perform under pressure.

Martin Brundle mentioned Lewis Hamilton as an eight-time world champion

While Hamilton’s qualifying was not a great show around Zandvoort, he was also involved in a fair share of incidents. Moreover, in Q1, he supposedly impeded Red Bull‘s Sergio Perez, which infuriated the Mexican, he deemed the 39-year-old to be an idiot.

Subsequently, when Martin Brundle referred to Perez’s statements, he accidentally called the Englishman an eight-time world champion.

This idiot, 8 time uhh 7 time world champion, 8 some people say.
Martin Brundle said over the Sky F1 broadcast

The British commentator was soon to rectify his mistake and asserted that the Mercedes driver was only a seven-time world champion. However, he later mentioned that some people still think Hamilton is an eight-time champion in a sarcastic follow-up.

Despite the Brit qualifying 12th, it is not sure he will retain his spot on the grid for tomorrow as he is currently under investigation for impeding Perez. Thus, he could face a grid drop of three places and start the race in 15th further adding salt to his wounds.
