Fernando Alonso‘s performance throughout the 2025 season has been insignificant. The F1 veteran has failed to amass any notable results so far and hasn’t even been able to contend for a podium finish.

After 19 outings, Alonso is only P12 in the driver’s standings, and his best finish is only a P5 finish at the Hungarian GP. As such, the Asturian blames Aston Martin for his woes this year, as he is clearly in his best racing form, according to him.

In the past, Fernando Alonso was poised among the greats in Formula 1 following his successful run back in 2005 and 2006. Alonso emerged as a winning force back then and was on the path to achieving some great results.

However, some questionable team changes caused the Asturian to dwindle in performances. Ultimately, his results deteriorated further, with his latest race win being at the 2013 Spanish GP and no victories since then.

However, despite these circumstances, Fernando Alonso isn’t wavering in his faith in himself and is confident of his capabilities. Alonso insisted that he was better than ever in terms of performance, regardless of the results.

He continued that Aston Martin’s challenger wasn’t in the ideal state since the past season. The Asturian noted that there were some issues in the car and the team that were being dealt with behind the scenes.

Better than ever. I think so. I think last year and this year, probably the car is not where we see in the standings. We have some issues behind [the scenes] and we’ve been dealing with some weaknesses that I think are not too obvious sometimes from the outside.

Fernando Alonso said, as reported by RacingNews365

Fernando Alonso confidently claimed that some of his results he achieved in recent years would not have been possible two decades ago in his racing career. Because of this, the 44-year-old was relaxed and wasn’t really concerned with the downfall in results.

Retiring from the sport in the coming season wasn’t really on his mind either. Apart from the issues this season, the Asturian remained happy and confident about his chances to succeed in 2026 and beyond.

But I think personally some of the performances of this year and last year were not possible 20 years ago. That’s my opinion. That’s why I’m relaxed, I’m happy, I’m enjoying and I’m confident for next year.

Fernando Alonso reveals driver doesn’t ‘get slower’ with increasing age

Fernando Alonso remains the oldest driver on the current F1 grid with the most number of race starts at 420. Alonso first debuted in Formula 1 back in 2001 and left the sport for a couple of years from 2019 to 2020. Despite being in the sport for more than two decades now, the Asturian insisted that he wasn’t getting slower with age; rather, it was the opposite.

Speaking on age being a factor in his retirement, Fernando Alonso noted that with age, a driver starts to lose motivation to race. An old driver would lose the hunger to keep training, jump in the car, and give it their all on the track.

However, for Alonso, despite being over 44 years of age, he wasn’t going through these feelings. As such, he concluded that a driver did not get slower with age, unless they develop issues in their body that come with increasing age.

The thing is that with age, you start losing motivation. You start losing the hunger of training every day and going to the factory, jumping in the car and performing at your best. At the moment that didn’t arrive to me, but I think that’s the problem. I don’t think that with age, any driver becomes slower, unless you have a problem of reflexes or vision, something that you are not at your 100%.

The 2026 season will have new regulations, and the grid might witness a shuffle in teams in terms of dominance on track. Aston Martin will join hands with Honda for their power units and can have a great season ahead. Now, time will tell about how Fernando Alonso fares in the coming season as he remains highly motivated to race despite his increasing age.
