Max Verstappen has emerged as one of the better drivers on the grid, especially in the 2025 season, following his positive results in a mediocre Red Bull chassis. The Dutchman has surprisingly joined the mix for the driver’s title following his impressive two-race win streak. Now, with the season finale nearing, F1 veteran Fernando Alonso christens Verstappen with an impressive label.

McLaren has remained the dominant team since the beginning of the 2025 season and hasn’t faltered in performance since then. Max Verstappen started the season off strong and picked up two race wins back then.

However, he lost massive performance mid-way through the season and had almost given up on the title. But now, a two-race win streak and a P2 finish have set him up nicely to potentially contend for the title by the season’s end.

Fernando Alonso, who is the oldest driver on the F1 grid, was questioned about his thoughts on the driver who could win the title this season. The Asturian accepted that it was difficult to pinpoint a single driver, but McLaren had the advantage because of the massive point lead against the rivals. As such, Alonso reckoned that the battle would be between them.

Regardless of the deficit, Fernando Alonso shed light on the fact that Max Verstappen was an incredible driver and that if there was anyone capable of bridging the gap, it was indeed him. Alonso continued that the Dutchman was a four-time champion, and his performance enabled him to be one of the best drivers in the history of Formula 1.

[It’s] difficult to guess … I would say the two McLarens have the advantage just because of the points advantage, I would say it is between the two of them. But Max is an incredible driver, and if there’s anyone who can overcome the deficit of the car it’s him. He is four-time world champion … he’s one of the best drivers in the history of the sport.

Max Verstappen can extract ‘the maximum’ from any car

Max Verstappen proved his racing prowess after dominating the grid for the entirety of the 2023 season and breaking multiple world records back then. As such, the Dutchman showcased what he could do when provided with a competitive challenger. Now, the 2025 season was different as his car was much inferior compared to the McLarens. Fernando Alonso noted that this further proved how Verstappen was a complete driver on the grid.

Fernando Alonso revealed that Max Verstappen was able to extract the maximum from the car regardless of its capabilities. Alonso continued that the Dutchman could win the title and break records when provided with a dominant car. On the contrary, when the challenger wasn’t as dominant, he could still emerge as a tough contender and achieve a good qualifying lap and provide a good fight to the rivals.

I think he’s able to extract the maximum from the car, and when the car is the dominant car he can win the championship and just break some records in the season. And when the car is not that good or not the fastest he can still provide a good lap in qualifying and a good race, a good fight.

Fernando Alonso added.

The 2025 season is nearing its completion, but the driver’s title battle is far from over. Although Verstappen is currently 63 points adrift of the lead, he can cover it in a couple of races. As such, it will certainly be interesting to witness how the Dutchman pulls off a seemingly impossible feat this year. For now, the 27-year-old is aiming to take the rest of the season race by race and see how it plays out.
