George Russell recently achieved a multi-year contract extension at Mercedes after struggling to finalize the contract for a very long time. The Briton was definitely getting impatient as Toto Wolff took his sweet time in finalizing the terms of the contract. Now that Russell had received what he wanted, he has now issued his full-fledged loyalty to Brackley and their ambitions in the coming years.

The 2025 season has been filled with ups and downs for Mercedes. The team started the season off in a decent manner, but lost performance mid-way through the year. However, George Russell put forth great consistency on track and picked off two coveted race wins. As such, Russell’s performances helped Brackley clinch the P2 spot in the constructors’ championship from Ferrari.

George Russell recently provided a long-awaited update on his contractual situation, with Toto Wolff also revealing the reasons behind the intense delay. Reportedly, Wolff’s deep interest in acquiring Max Verstappen at Mercedes as soon as the 2026 season was likely the reason behind the intense delay in Russell’s extension. Despite the resentment the Briton might have built in him, he is faithful to the German constructor.

Speaking on his loyalty, George Russell declared that he was fully loyal to Mercedes, more so because the team had showcased loyalty to him. Further, Russell insisted that going into the 2026 season, Brackley undoubtedly had the best chance of winning a world championship under the new regulations. The team was reportedly leading the power unit development in the regulations and can emerge as a winning force.

I’m loyal to Mercedes, they’ve shown their loyalty in me, and I believe going into 2026, Mercedes without a doubt has my best chance of winning a world championship.

George Russell reveals ‘intentions’ to continue with Mercedes indefinitely

George Russell had recently drawn a parallel to Michael Schumacher and how he failed to contend for a driver’s title for a very long time in his career. The Briton reckoned that he might emerge as a title contender soon in his career, even though he failed to do so at Mercedes for the past three years. Regardless, Russell clarified his intentions to continue racing for the team, no matter their interest in signing Max Verstappen at the first possible opportunity.

Speaking on his ambitions, George Russell revealed that his intention and goal were to continue racing for Mercedes indefinitely, no matter the circumstances. He continued that his and Brackley’s goal was to win in the 2026 season and potentially contend for both titles. For now, the team will aim to end the 2025 season on the best possible note and hold onto their runner-up finish in the title.

The Briton explained that his contract extension relied on performance, as was the case for any other driver. George Russell reckoned that his performances helped him sleep well at night. Russell continued that at the end of the day, results were what kept a driver thriving in the pinnacle of motorsport and gained beneficial contract extensions with the team.

Our intention and my goal is to continue with Mercedes indefinitely, and we’re here to focus on winning in 2026. It always just comes down to performance. For any driver, or at least for myself, what allows me to sleep well at night is knowing that my performances are strong, and that is what will keep you in the sport.

George Russell added

Mercedes still has a long way to go if they want to seriously contend for either of the titles. The 2025 season is nearing its completion, and Brackley now has no realistic chance at fighting for the driver’s title with George Russell. As such, the 2026 season will be interesting to witness as the German carmaker hopes to put forth much better results.
