The Austrian GP was undoubtedly one of the most thrilling races of the 2024 F1 season. Right when it seemed Max Verstappen was on course for yet another race victory, disaster struck as the Dutch driver collided with Lando Norris. George Russell emerged as the lucky winner of the race. The Mercedes driver claimed that he witnessed the battle live during the race.

Russell highlighted that it was incredible to win the Austrian GP. The British driver admitted that it was a tough race as he continued to battle the likes of Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz. George Russell was just a few seconds ahead of second-placed Piastri at the time of incident between the race leaders.

George Russell revealed that he was watching the battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris on the big screens during the race. The Mercedes driver saw Norris make a late plunge for the lead, this inevitably led to a major incident at the front. However, Russell praised Mercedes for picking up the pieces and taking its first victory since 2022.

I was watching the big screens and saw Lando go for it. The team have done an amazing job and we picked up the pieces.

George Russell ‘surprised’ over gap to Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during Austrian GP

Max Verstappen had gained a comfortable lead to Norris with just over 10 laps to go. However, a late pitstop allowed Lando Norris to come within two seconds of the Dutch driver. Eventually, the two were battling for the lead with George Russell being around 12 seconds behind in third place.

Russell admitted that he was surprised to be so far behind the race leaders before the incident. The Mercedes driver claimed that he always hopes that something happens at the front, which might allow him to be in the mix for victory. Certainly, this came true at the Austrian GP for George Russell’s second F1 career win.

Russell and Mercedes are delighted to end their win drought in Formula 1. However, it is clear that the Silver Arrows lack the pace to be real contenders for victories. As such, George Russell and his team would be looking to improve further in the coming races.
