Mercedes has managed a disappointing end to the 2024 US GP qualifying. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were expected to score great points over the American weekend. However, a botched Q1 session from Hamilton and Russell’s colossal crash during Q3 acted as body blows to the team.

George Russell managed to clear the Q1 session while Lewis Hamilton faced a shock elimination in the same. Russell was on the trajectory to score a P5 or better start for the COTA race. However, a crash during the final stages of the Q3 session at Turn 19 meant that the Briton couldn’t improve his position.

The 26-year-old is set to start the US GP from the sixth position after the shunt on the last lap. He will have to work hard on the track to move up the pecking order and score good points over the weekend. As things stand, Mercedes’ battle with Ferrari for the P3 position in the constructors’ championship will take a massive hit.

George Russell was unhurt from the massive quali crash

The 2024 season has witnessed some major crashes involving George Russell, especially the one in Australia. However, thankfully, the Briton was unhurt from the incident and walked away safely. Russell immediately took to the team radio after his COTA crash and noted that he was ‘OK’. Moreover, the W15 also didn’t incur major damage.

George Russell’s crash meant that Lando Norris was handed the pole position due to the yellow flag. Max Verstappen was on an extremely fast lap when the crash occurred. Regardless, the two championship contenders will start on the front row and showcase some exciting racing action from the get-go.
