George Russell has put forth one of the most consistent performances compared to other rivals on the grid. Mercedes’ performance has remained mediocre, but Russell has managed to achieve a single race win and seven podium finishes so far this year. However, the Briton’s contract, which ends in the 2025 season, is yet to be renewed by the German carmaker. Now, the 27-year-old has finally provided a long-awaited update on his contractual situation for the coming year.

Toto Wolff‘s deep interest in acquiring Max Verstappen at Mercedes in the 2026 season was believed to be the reason behind the intense delay in extending George Russell‘s contract. Moreover, the delay caused rumors to come up of Kimi Antonelli seeking to join other teams. However, Wolff quickly ended these rumors and cleared the air. Now, Russell has opened up on his contractual situation and what’s to come next for him.

George Russell insisted that in his entire career with Mercedes, the team supported him fully and gave him amazing opportunities. Russell noted that the goals aligned for both parties and were in the best interest of both Mercedes and himself. However, now in the past six months, the situation was very unique and unlike anything before.

I mean, from my whole career until last year, the team have supported me so much and given me such amazing opportunities. Our goals have been aligned and what has been in the best interest of the team has also been in the best interest of me.

George Russell said, as reported by motorsport.com.

The Briton asserted that he did not have much power in terms of negotiating his contract with Mercedes for the coming season and beyond. Because of this, he was at risk of losing his seat with the German carmaker in the past six months. However, Russell reckoned that it was his job to perform well and prove to Brackley that he deserved the seat.

Now, of course, these last six months have been a very unique situation where I don’t have huge power in that sort of agreement and maybe the interests were not aligned for some time, which has, of course, put me at risk for these last six months, but then it was my job to perform and reduce that risk.

George Russell reveals Mercedes ‘not assuring’ him of his F1 future

George Russell had recently ranted about how he was yet to even contend for his first driver’s title despite racing with Mercedes for so long. The unexpected delay in Russell’s contract extension is definitely going to be a point of concern if it does not arrive anytime soon. Toto Wolff is still hopeful of acquiring Max Verstappen in the squad one day in the near future. As such, the Briton issued a shocking confession about his job guarantee in Formula 1.

Speaking on the delay, George Russell insisted that he trusted Toto Wolff and Mercedes to keep supporting his F1 career as long as he performed well. As such, he needed to focus on his results and nothing else. However, Russell did accept that the past months had not been very reassuring for him and Kimi Antonelli, something that the team needed to really shed light on. The 27-year-old acknowledged that the recent few months were conflicting for him.

I still trust Toto and I still trust in the team that they will always support me as long as I’m performing. So that’s what I need to focus on. But of course, for both Kimi and I, these past months have not been the most assuring for our future and that’s just been a bit conflicting.

George Russell noted.

Mercedes has managed to clinch the runner-up spot in the constructors’ standings from Ferrari in the final stages of the 2025 season. George Russell has to keep up with such results and keep on giving it his all. The Briton has already achieved a pole position for the Singapore GP and is poised for a stellar race win on Sunday.
